Westmorland / Re: Gerrard Rawes - Beetham
« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 09:45 BST (UK)  »

Thank you for the replies.

True there's 2 Gerrards that's the problem.

One married Mary Mounsey and the other married Margaret Cannon.

William & Ann's Gerrard died in 1825 and left a will and he married Mary Mounsey.
Lived in Swindale Head, Shap Westmorland.

I haven't been able to find a death for Gerrard (son of Gerrard & Elizabeth).

cheers

Westmorland / Gerrard Rawes - Beetham
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 04:20 BST (UK)  »

Hi All

I'm trying to go backwards but finding it difficult to find proof.  I'm hoping someone may be able to either help me or point me in the right direction.

What I know:-

Robert RAWS/RAWES (Rose) baptised 8/10/1780 in Beetham married Sarah Levens  5/5/1806 Kendal, Westmorland

Robert was the son of Gerrard RAWES and Margaret CANNON .

Gerrard & Margaret married 6/11/1773 Burton, Westmorland.

I believe Gerrard (Jarret/Gerard) was the son of Gerrard RAWES/RAWS and Elizabeth POTTER and was baptised in Orton 5 Mar 1748.
But I can't find any proof.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Thank you so much Matt, your help is very much appreciated.
Fills in some of the dates and a whole lot of information on the families.

Is there a possible mistake in the death of Margaret as I was certain she died 1850.  I have John's marriage to Catherine Sayers 10 June 1851, she was a servant living in his household on the 1851 census.

Which I could find what happened to Samuel, Mary & Ellen.

Cheers

Hi All

Hoping for some help.

John Erskine born circa 1811 Krikcudbright married Margaret Maben born Circa 1811
on 20 March 1834
I have found birth records for the following children:-
Mary born 24 April 1835 deceased ?
Mary born 1 March 1836
Jane born 10 Sep 1838 died Bendigo Victoria Australia 1924
Ellen born 24 Jul 1840
Janet born 17 Dec 1841 deceased ?
Samuel born 22 Dec 1843 deceased ?
Samuel born 26 Jan 1845
John born 4 Feb 1846 died 16th May 1915
Margaret born 23 Aug 1850

Margaret Erskine nee Maben died prior to the 1851 census
John Erskine married Catherine Sayers in 1851
He died in 17 Mar 1853.

I can't find Margaret's exact date of Death.  I'd also like to find who her parents are, I believe her father is James Maben.

Samuel & John Erskine are living with their Uncle James McCleave & Aunt Mary McCleave nee Erskine in 1861.  John continues to reside with the family, he marries Mary Ann ? 1894 and his cousin Ellen McCleave is living with the family in 1901.
Would like to know what happened to Samuel.

The youngest child Margaret is living with her Aunt Jane Maben in 1861 and with both Jane and her widowed Aunt Isabella Morton nee Maben in 1871.  In 1881 Margaret is a Dressmaker and still living in St Cuthbert St Kirkcudbright.
Not Sure what happens to her after 1881

I have not been able to find what happened to Mary or Ellen.   If anyone could shed any light it would be much appreciated.

cheers

Hi

Thank you Trish18 =, that certainly looks like them in the US.

Yes Mabel Bagahawe she was christened Sarah Ann but I think it's her and she just took on the middle name Jane.  I was hoping the marriage certificate would help but of course it didn't.

Sarah is not with the rest of Forster family in 1851. My Sarah Jane is in a Wolverhampton Workhouse having just given birth to Harriet.

Thanks for finding the information on John jnr.  I will check that out.

cheers

Thank you for your replies.

Probate records confirm John Podesta snr died in Newport Mon in May 1881. I think he's probably with Francis & Angelina Greco at the boarding house at 75 Canal Pde, only initials have been recorded in 1881 and the Greco name has been written as Gluco.

I can't find Harriet's family after 1881, do I assume they left the country?

I'll check out the John & Annie in northumberland, maybe that's Jnr.

Do you have an opinion on Charles Smith & Charles Coyle; are they possibly the same person?

Cheers

Dublin / Re: Marriage of Theophilus Pitt & Alicia ?
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 04:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi There

So, you have brothers Thomas & Richard AND a sister.

You say that you know that Richard was English, and given that you aren't looking for help on this board with the 'sister' I take it that she was English too and we are making the presumption that Thomas was English too.

Tara

Hi Tara

I think I've confused you.

Theophilus Pitt and his wife Alicia and 5 children came to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) in Jan 1828 on Greenock from Ireland.
Theophilus died in Hobart in 1829.
Alicia died in 1847 in Hobart.
Of the 5 children:-
Eleanor died 1843
Maria (my ggggrandmother) married Stephen Le Busque in 1836 (Longford, Tasmania) moved to Victoria
Catherine married Thomas Firman in 1843 (Hobart, Tasmania) moved to Victoria
Thomas (who became a Wheelwright and is mentioned in Richard Pitt's will) married Jane Porter in 1848 (Launceston, Tas) stayed in Tasmania.
Margaret married Thomas Alexander in 1845 (Hobart, Tasmania) moved to South Australia

Maria & Stephen LeBusque were living in Longford at the time of the 1842 Census and Thomas (Maria's brother was living with them)

Richard Pitt who was convicted in 1810 in Maidstone Kent, mentioned Thomas, his nephew, in his will when he died in 1843.

Richard Pitt could very well be Irish.  He was convicted in Kent but I don't know where his native place was.

Eleanor's 1818 baptism lists one of her sponsors as Thomas Pitt.

Could he be another brother or Theophilus father?

cheers
