Dublin / Re: Marriage of Theophilus Pitt & Alicia ?
« on: Monday 06 October 14 00:56 BST (UK)  »

Hi Tara

No unfortunatley, Richard Pitt was sent as a convict to Van Dieman's Land in 1811.  The only reason I know they're brothers is that Richard left an inheritance to his nephew Thomas Pitt a Wheelwright of Longford, Tasmania when he died in 1843.
I linked them because Thomas was with his sister and her husband (my family) in the 1842 census in Tasmania and his occupation was listed as Wheelwright.

Now, I've just work on the parents of Theophilus & Alicia.  I think Theophilus is english, as his brother Richard was tried and sentenced in Maidstone, Kent.

Dublin / Marriage of Theophilus Pitt & Alicia ?
« on: Sunday 05 October 14 06:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to locate the marriage of Theophilus PITT & Alicia ?. They married circa 1817.
I'm assuming it was in Dublin as that's where the children have been baptised.
The baptisms come from Ancestry "Ireland, Select Catholic Births & Baptisms Registers 1763-1912"

Children:-
Eleanor 9 Feb 1818 Westland Row, Dublin
Maria 6 Feb 1820 Westland Row, Dublin
Catherine born circa 1823 (the only baptism I can't locate)
Thomas 28 Dec 1824 Westland Row, Dublin
Margaret 6 Jun 1827 Westland Row, Dublin

The family came to Australia in 1828, on the 'Greenoch'. Theophilus died 1829 in Hobart.
He was born Circa 1795 and Alicia Circa 1800.

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

Down / Alice Dowd born circa 1826 Newry Ireland
« on: Wednesday 24 September 14 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All I thought I'd post one of my problem families. I'm trying to go backwards.

My Great Great Grandmother Alice GIBSON born 30th July 1862 in Bendigo Victoria Australia
Parents: George Gard(i)ner GIBSON (born: Circa 1832 Lancashire) and Alice DOWD (born: Circa 1826 Newry County Down Ireland)

Alice DOWD married John AUGLAM in Ireland, when?
They had a daughter Mary Ann AUGLAM in County Down Ireland in 1857, she died in Bendigo on 28th January 1859 (aged 1 year 9 months and had been in Victoria 1 year)

I'd like to try and find Alice's parents.

Cheers

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help on Death Extract Please
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 03:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi ThommoS

I would say it's ENSLEY. Death certificates can be helpful but also problematic.  On looking at the information given, I wonder if maybe the grand daughter was misinformed.
Assuming that the length of time written in each state is accurate, then the Hobart marriage would have taken place circa 1853 when the deceased was 14.
I note that only a few of the births were registered and both have different surnames for the mother Henry's is HENSLEY and Richard's has HOLLAND.  Have you got any of the birth certificates?
Who was the informant on them? What date was given for the marriage?

Hello Tuppence

I think maybe Walter Gilbert or Gilchrist, could be a surname but also could be a middle name.
Have you researched any of the Walter's in your family.
It looks like India to me.
