Louth / Re: MURTAGH OF DUNDALK

I am descended from a branch of the Murtaughs that all left Dundalk in 1855 and went to Sunderland, Co. Durham in north-east England. Patrick and John ended up as "Murtha" and that is the name that stuck down the generations.

In fact even in the original baptismal records,al three variations of the spelling are present within the family:

Murtha
Murtaugh
Murthaugh

There are still lots of Murthas in Sunderland although my grandfather who married Dorothy Murtha moved to London between the wars.

My gr.gr.gr.grandfather George Vincent (1777-1838) was married to Rebekkah (sic) Chamberlain in Melcombe Horsey where he died. His son James was baptised there 1814 and also married there to Martha Smith Gover in 1837.

James went to Sunderland and I have a fairly complete tree forwards but I can't move backwards into George's parent's generation.

He is NOT one of the Georges that lived in Dewlish although it is quite possible that he was related.

He was a "servant" on James' marriage cert. as was Martha's father Silas Gover. The Dewlish/Milbourne St Andrew Govers are extremely well documented elsewhere. I wonder if that was at the big house in Melcombe Horsey?

Any clues to be found out there?

Durham / Re: COUNDON

I know this was a long time ago but here goes...

Hannah Coundon (1888 - 1975) married John Murtha (1885 - 1952) in 1911. John was living at 6 Zion Street Sunderland with his uncle Joseph in the 1901 census. They had five children and there are about 25 blood descendants in my tree.
Hope this helps.

I know this thread paused some years ago but I'm a newbie so ...

Joseph Laverick (b Sunderland Q2/1879) married Martha Murtha. Martha's brother Partick married Honoria Mackin (b Felling 1888). Since one of the previous messgaes contained both Laverick and Mickin as "interests" I though it worth a punt!
