I wondered if anyone knows where the Kearley and Tonge warehouse was situated in the early 1950's.  I have checked via Google but can only find information about its London premises.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / William Taylor born c 1800, Liverpool
« on: Monday 21 May 12 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I wondered if some kind person out there with access to the St. Peter's church records, would be willing to look for a marriage of William Taylor to Jane between 1827 and 1830.  William was a furniture broker, living in Dickinson Street.

Lancs OPC seem to have these years missing so I hope that the records haven't been lost or damaged!

Thanking you in advance.

« on: Sunday 08 January 12 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,

I have a Scottish marriage record, Edinburgh, 1819, which has the letters OGTP or OGFP after the groom's name.  Does anyone know what these letters mean?

Many thanks

Midlothian / Does anyone know Lauriston Place, Edinburgh?
« on: Monday 15 August 11 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

One of my ancestors owned a house at 65 Lauriston Place.  She is listed there in all the censuses from 1841 to 1881.    I have been up and down Lauriston Place on Streetmap trying to see if the property is still there.

There is Chalmers Hospital, a 1960's box,  apparently at number 55.  Then there are a number of old buildings which appear to be owned by the NHS, but no numbers listed.  Then on the corner of Lauriston Gardens there is St. Katherines Convent whose address is Lauriston Gardens.  Then on the next corner a derelict church for which I found a document giving the address as 59.  Then we come to a house numbered 77 then a Best Western Hotel numbered 79.  I am confused!

A couple of questions - does anyone know if these old stone buildings existed in the 1890's or were they built since then?  Also, were any of the properties renumbered at any time?

Any help would be appreciated.

Can anyone help to solve this mystery?

I am trying to find the birth of my great grandmother and her siblings, with  no luck at all.

My great grandmother was Sarah Sarchfield.  She married John Conway in 1881 in North Meols (now Southport) Lancashire.  North Meols came under Ormskirk for registration purposes at the time.

Sarah was the daughter of John Sarchfield.  John was living with (not sure if married to) Mary McLoughlin in 1871 and 1881 in North Meols.  Both appear to have been born in Ireland.  Mary’s surname comes from the St. Marie’s parish records listing the births of some of her children.

For some reason the family was also known as Mitchell.  In the 1871 and 1881 censuses they were listed as Mitchell.  The children all married as Sarchfield.  Mary’s death is listed in St. Marie’s parish records as “Mary Sarchfield alias Mitchell.”  John committed suicide in the 1880’s and the newspaper report gives his name as Sarchfield.

Sarah had a sister Mary, brothers John and Thomas, all born in Manchester according to the censuses.  The family then had more children, including Annie Sarchfield  (registered as Saurchfield) born 1867 in North Meols and James born 1870 in North Meols.

There seems to be 2 sets of children within the family - one born in Manchester and one later in North Meols.

I can’t find any births of the children allegedly born in Manchester.  Sarah was born between 1854 and 1858.  Mary  was a year or so older.  Thomas was born in the late 1850’s and John in the early 1860’s.

I don’t know if both John and Mary were the parents, or John and an earlier wife.  There is even a possibility that the children were born to different parents, whose father died and the mother married John Sarchfield, and later died, leaving him to marry ( or live with ) Mary.

I found a marriage of an Emily Victoria Sarsfield to John Mitchell in Manchester in 1864 but she was single and I can’t find Emily in 1861 or later censuses.

There was a John Sarsfield in the army in Scotland in 1841 and in Aston, Birmingham in 1851 but again I have no proof it was the same person.  It is interesting his commanding officer was named Mitchell!  I have found Reuben Mitchell in 1861 but not John Sarsfield.

So to summarise, I am trying to find the family in the 1861 census and the births of the children in Manchester, between 1853 and 1865.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / John Teal born c 1796, Horsforth
« on: Monday 03 January 11 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters and a Happy New Year to all!   :D

I wondered if anyone has access to the Parish Records for Horsforth?  I'm looking for the birth/baptism of a John Teal with the aim of finding his father's name.

1841 census gives his age as 35 , 1851 census as 55 and 1861 census as 64.  He married a Martha Wilkinson and lived at Garden Street Horsforth.

1851/1861 censuses give his place of birth as Horsforth.  His occupation was a mason/quarryman.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Technical Help / COMPLETED - Has anyone else had problems following AVG renewal?
« on: Saturday 18 September 10 11:35 BST (UK)  »
I renewed my AVG subscription a couple of days ago and from then on I have had difficulty in exiting screens in internet explorer.

For instance if I logged into Rootschat then clicked the red X at the top to exit I get a blank screen with the Rootschat address in the top box.  The blank screen sits there until I click again.  I then get a "programme not responding" message where I then have to click "end now".  This happens every time I try to exit any site.

Can anyone help please?

Hello Rootschatters

I have been trying to find the location of the Estella in October 1870.  I have found a record of the death of my gg grandfather, Benjamin Griffiths, on 24th October 1870.  He was serving on the Estella and apparently drowned.

There are some mentions of a ship called "Estella" in the 1890's and later but I can't seem to find anything around the right time.

Can anyone advise me where I could find more details?

Thank you
