Staffordshire / Simon and Ann OAKDEN - Waterfall
« on: Monday 10 February 14 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I was hoping someone would be able to help me find the parents for Ann Oakden born about 1690 Waterfall, Staffordshire.

I know she married Henry Coates born 1682 in Waterfall and one of their children was Henry Coates born 1719 who married Dorothy Cook.

I think her father was Simon Oakden but this is where confusion starts as I think there were 2 Simon Oakden's?

If anyone could help me to get further into my tree and find the parents of Ann this would be much appreciated.  I would really love to know the name of her parents.

Thank you

Armed Forces / Suffolk Milita 1854 - Languard Fort Jail (Ebenezer Serjeant)
« on: Monday 10 June 13 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am trying to find information for an Ebenezer Serjeant (born 1826 Ipswich, Suffolk).

It seems he was in the Suffolk Milita and in 1854 was in jail at Languard Fort.

Does anyone know how I could find out why he was in jail?  and when/how long he was in the Suffolk Milita for?  and whether he travelled anywhere or was he just based in Suffolk?  I've no idea how to find any information about this so if anyone could help me this would be much appreciated.

Thank you

The Common Room / Ebenezer Serjeant - Criminal record, Jail sheet?
« on: Thursday 30 May 13 15:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am trying to find out whether an ancestor of mine had a criminal record.

Ive been told that there was a jail sheet for him (I am unsure of what this is) when he was in prison in 1854.

There were 2 Ebenezer Serjeant's in my family tree but the one I think it is was born in 1826 Ipswich, Suffolk.

In 1851 he was lodging in Derbyshire with the Sisson family (I think he was a carpenter).  Then in 1861 he was with his wife Angelina Mower and children back in Ipswich, St Matthew, Suffolk.

Ive been unable to find anything for 1854 and so I am very confused.

What is a jail sheet and how do I find out prison information for this time?  If anyone knows of any way I can find out this information for Ebenezer, please let me know, this would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Famous old Ratcliffian help
« on: Friday 11 November 11 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I have been going through some old things and have come across an old pencil drawing. It is an old Ratcliffian. I guess he must be famous and have gone to the Ratcliffe College but I have no clue who he could be. The bag may suggest he was a Doctor and the musical notes indicate he was into music.
Has any body any idea who this could be. I have contacted Ratcliffe College but yet to get a reply.
Please help.

« on: Monday 07 November 11 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello I have found an old postcard dated 1904 and postmarked Portsmouth with what I think may be Capt Edward John Smith and crew. Post card shows full crew. Wondered if any body else had an opinion on it.

Many Thanks
