Kent Lookup Requests / Re: ALICE JAMES/ARTHUR BLENKINSOP FORSTER, SEVENOAKS 1910

Thank you.  Firstly, I checked on maps.google and Llandaff is an area of Cardiff.  On Family Search Alice's christening - naming correct parents is for 20 Mar 1873 in Canton.  On google, this appears to be more or less the next town.  My only reservation with all this, is the name Aubrey as her middle name.  To me this would appear to be a male, family name passed down.  However, I haven't come across any Aubrey on my searches.  On her birth/christening and 1881 census where she was 8yrs old and living in West Ham, London with the family, she is just referred to as Alice.  I don't know if 'my' Alice even had a middle name.  I have sent off for the birth cert, but as she's always been called just Alice, I'm wondering if I have the right one.  Everything else relating to the family story about her departure to the States with this man, ties in, even to the year 1911.  I was just wondering if you had any magical insight into tracking down 'Alice Aubrey'.  I tried looking for a birth of that name and approx year and drew a blank.  Thanks, Sally :)

Many thanks for that.  I have paid and got the transcription for 1911 - says they are visitors and he was a school master.  If I go onto the other thread, can I ask you one more question or should I do it here - over her birth name? :-\  Sally

Hi, I'm so sorry about the confusion.  I just thought people on each area had their expertise for that area.  I didn't realise you all help with all areas.  I shall continue on the other thread.  FYI, the answers to your questions are:   the only census I can find Alice on is 1881, when she was abt 8 living with her family in London.  I can't find anything about her on 1891 or 1901.  On the other thread I was told their last known address in the UK was Low Fell, Gateshead.  On this basis, that area is still not on the 1911 Census.  I was just trying to get some background as to why they were in Sevenoaks.  Sally :-\

Hi,  Thank you for your help.  Before I comment, can I just clear something up?  Sorry about the other thread, but I thought I needed to make contact with each area to try to get answers (i.e. America and Kent).  Which thread would you like me to continue with this on?  Thanks, Sally

Thank you Wendy for that bit of information.  I found on a census that Margaret was born in Stockton, so that's a good confirmation!  Sally

Out of interest, does anyone know where the records for Sevenoaks are kept?

Hi Wendy,
Thank you for joining in!  I had tracked Arthur Blenkinsop Forster down to a birth 5 Oct 1882 in Darlington.  Blenkinsop appears to be his mother's maiden name.  On marriage cert he mentions his father as Robert and profession as station master.  His mother's name was Margaret. Unsure who the John Forster on the 1901 census is.  Sally

Hi,  Can anyone help me with any information on the above two people.   I have their marriage certificate as 29 July 1910 at Sevenoaks Registry Office.  The address given for the groom was Royal Crown Hotel, Sevenoaks and for the bride, Montreal, Sevenoaks.  Have googled Montreal, and it could either have been Montreal Cottage in Riverhead/Sevenoaks or somewhere in Montreal Road, Sevenoaks.  They appear to be large houses, so perhaps she was working in one of them.  Arthur Forster was a teacher (have details of him being a French teacher in the States in the 1930's).  Could anyone help with where I could start looking to see what his employment was, presumably in Sevenoaks, around 1910?  Also, my family remembers talk of Alice James being a nurse.  Any ideas would be fantastic, as am at a loss as  to what took Alice James to Sevenoaks in the first place! :)

Many thanks Shelley for your input.  I didn't know where Fortuna was in comparison to LA - I hadn't got around to 'googling' it!  I suppose the passenger list for 1923 ties up with their passport application which was April 1923.  Am puzzled again over Alice's birth date and place.  I found her christening record on familysearch site which gave 20 March 1973 - and named the correct parents, so why would they give a different date for the naturalisation papers - I haven't come across any other family member who has changed their age so much as Alice - perhaps because she was that much younger than the husband?  I googled Llandoff and it is a hop, skip and a jump away from Canton - another suburb of Cardiff, which is where the christening took place.  I shall look up the ship from 1923 on the internet and see what I find.  Presumably they left the States around May/Jun heading for Europe.  Presumably a French teacher's wages must have been pretty good in those times to afford the travelling they did in Europe?!  Sally
