Gloucestershire / Stokes family Wickwar - Surgeons?
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 23:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I have Sarah Elizabeth Stokes as baptised in Wickwar in 1818, she later married a Thomas Purser in Liverpool in 1854 and later settles in Wales.

I have been told her father was Edward Stokes, a surgeon, who died in Manorbier Pembrokeshire in 1828.

Edward Stokes supposedly had a brother Thomas who died 15 jan 1803 aged 70 years.  He was also a surgeon and then at Milford Pembrokeshire - but I have no idea where Thomas or Edward were born.

Any info would be appreciated.

Pembrokeshire / Thomas Stokes (Milford) died 15 jan 1803
« on: Tuesday 28 September 10 23:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi - just wondering if anyone knows anything about this man?

Seems he may have been a surgeon, and was probably 70 when he died - making his date of birth around 1733.

He had a brother Edward who was also a surgeon, and who died in Manorbier in 1828.
I have no idea where these two were born.

Edward's daughter Sarah Elizabeth Stokes was born in Wickwar in 1818, married Thomas Purser in 1854 in Liverpool.

Buckinghamshire / HARMANs - Wooburn, Burnham, High Wycombe
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 17:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi - new to this county so forgive my ignorance.
I have a line going back to Joseph Harman born about 1825 in Wooburn.
Joseph is shown as a Rag Merchant in Speen in 1851 - then he moves to Dorset.

Joseph's father is shown as James Harman born about 1797 in Burnham.  On the 1841 census as paper maker at High Wycombe and in 1851 at Wooburn.

The 1861 census has Joseph in Dorset as a rag merchant with a nephew called John Harman born about 1842 in Wycombe Marsh and a married niece called Kezia Hyde born 1814 at Wooburn (I have found her husband as a Robert Hyde).

It is believed that the John Harman born in 1842 (possibly he is John Samuel - or is there two?) is the son of James Harman (b 1797 in Burnham and Ann b 1803 in Londwater).

? Does anyone have any more information to connect these two branches of the same family - or any information on the rag or paper trade - they all seem to have been paper makers, rag dealers or marine store dealers.

Nottinghamshire / Helen Fretwell b 1821 Nottinghamshire
« on: Tuesday 25 May 10 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi - cannot find her!
Probably a reasonably well-to-do family as her husband - James Startin, founded the London Skin Hospital and ended up in Savile Row with servants etc- so I doubt she came from a labouring family!
Haven't got the marriage but info came from some old research of an aunt. She may have married abroad as they did live abroad for a while
All I have is her place of birth on the 1861 census as Nottinghamshire - about 1821.
From the husband's obituary we have:
he married a lady with property, and was unfortunately himself persuaded to take shares in the bank of which she was also a shareholder.
Any advice much appreciated.

Pembrokeshire / Glanville baptisms Milford Haven - 1800/10
« on: Saturday 17 April 10 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find baptisms for someone who is researching the Glanvville family.

Richard Glvanille was born in 1778 in Ashburton - he married Sarah Prickett - possibly at Milford - in 1801.

Elusive children are:

A RICHARD was apparently birn in 1803 - but nothing has been found for him.  Also a brother THOMAS EDWARD, possibly 1808/9, maybe at St Ishmaels.

Later children were found baptised at the Independent Church of Milford Haven.

Carmarthenshire / Great House FArm Pendine - Rees/james
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
Been doing a distant cousins line and have got back to rees who were at Great House Farm Pendine.

John Rees b 1768 married Sarah James b 1755 (her parents William James and Margaret Lloyd also of Great House).

It was a very large old farmhouse and I've found a picture on the geograph.org website http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/940166.

however can't find anything about its history, who lived there etc on web - wondered if anyone knew anything about it?

Have found the people mentioned above referred to in Mary Curtis's book on Laugharne - and the fact they are buried at Pendine Church.
