Cheshire / Flat boats built in Runcorn
« on: Monday 24 November 08 21:03 GMT (UK)  »
I am told my uncle's family used to own barges in Runcorn, His name was Ernie Abel.
I can find only very limited information on what might have been his family, I can get to Richard Abel & sons who started boat making -I think around 1850 and ceased around 1952/3.

I would love any information on who they were and what happened to the company.

Family History Beginners Board / Healey Ancestors maybe from Cork
« on: Wednesday 19 November 08 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
In 1881 Mary Healey dob 1865 saying she was born in Cork Ireland was living with her parents Martin Healey dob1839 her mother Ellen Healey(maiden name Cook )dob 1846.
After various searches and with help from other people I think I found Mary with surname Haley in 1891 census as a boarder.
I maybe clutching at straws but I would like to some help to see if the family were from Cork any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

They are certainly elusive!!! maybe this is one of those skeletons in the cupboard, perhaps Thomas had a criminal record when he was born so didn't want to be registered to avoid police capture.
Very cunning these kids.

Excellent !!  Thank you both, why couldn't I find that? Still quite new at this.
Been backwards and forwards over BMD's and things don't seem to turn up. Don't suppose this gets any easier does it?

All the help has been excellent on this site, now my long suffering husband has started on his family tree and now cannot find the birth of his ggrandfather.
In 1901 census: Warrington.

Thomas Woodey age 37 born Princes End Staffs
Ruth Woodey age 37 born Staffs Bilston
Samuel Woodey age 12
Edward age 12
Emily age 5
Ernest 6
Ruth his Grandmother age 12 born Warrington

1891 census

Thomas Woodey age 29 born Darleston
Ruth Woodey age 29 born Bilston
Ruth Woodey age 3

Cannot  find  a marriage or birth of Thomas or Ruth snr. Do they just disappear in the mists of time? Would have though it would be simple in England with no Irish connection, any ideas?

:)  :)In reply to Silvery, a big thank you, today i received the birth certificate for my great grandfather Martin Thomas Healey. But His birth certificate was as you said spelt as Haley, his mother was Ellen Haley  on the cert and because of the irish accent the registrar spelt it that way and because it appears Ellen couldn't read or write properley thats how the mistake happened.

Martin Haley dob 10/02/1877 Ellen's maiden name was Cook and the address was in Warrington.

I also requested Martin Healey His Father's death certificate 17/9/1885 and Ellen Healey his Mother 's death cert 7/4/1906 both stated that they died in Warrington.
Martin in the union workhouse and Ellen in Warrington workhouse. Will they be the same place?Martins death was registered by the master of the workhouse, Ellen's was registered by John Healey her son who in the 1891 census lived with her in bridge street buildings as a galvanising labourer and Ellen his mother was a washerwoman. But in the 1901 census i cant seem to find Ellen and John
only Martin junior married to Sarah ellen with daughters Ethel and Nellie also his younger brother James..

Now i am trying to find out what happened to the other siblings because as yet i cant find anything other than they were born in Ireland.

phew dont i go on?
