Westmorland Lookup Requests / Re: Kendal record office lookup please
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
I would think it means that your ancestor was posthumously baptised by the Mormons. The practice of posthumous baptism has been part of the church’s theology almost since its founding.

As the film you refer to is an index, I think you now need to look again at the Parish Registers on microfilm and widen the search a few years before and after the possible baptism (these registers are not indexed on the IGI until the year 1813).  As I mentioned in my last posting you could carry this out at Preston Records Office as they have the PRs on microfilm. Kendal hold the Bishops Transcripts only (copies of the PRs sent to the Bishop yearly).

Another thing to consider is even if he was christened at Kirkby Lonsdale, he was illegitimate and his mother would possibly travel outside her parish to have him christened. It's also highly unlikely that you would find out who the father was unless there was a bastardy bond taken out to make the father responsible for the upkeep of the child. Possibly the best way forward is to trace Mary's parents and work back from there.

The only records indexed by LDS for Kirkby Lonsdale are:

C055441 1813-1858
C391278 1813-1901
C391279 1813-1901
M055441 1813-1837
C= Christenings
M = Marriages

The record which you refer to Batch No I03668-0 is not an entry from the parish register but from  an indexing project (I = Indexing Project Batch Number) so open to errors and no way of finding out where the information was taken from when compiling this index.

The reference for Kirkby Lonsdale parish records which are held at Preston Records Office on microfilm is WPR19 1538-1967, and Kendal Records Office hold the Bishops’ Transcripts only on microfilm.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Brough Cemetery, Cumbria?
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry - my fault, these MIs were recorded way before your ancestor was buried

M.I.s for Brough were transcribed in Monumental Inscriptions of Westmorland by E. Bellasis 1888-89 and are available on Westmorland Papers.

I would have thought that it might be worth getting in touch with Kendal Council initially. Might also be worth contacting Kendal Records Office by email.

Graham came originally from Scotland, they were well known Border Reivers, so more likely to be Kirkandrews on Esk. Kirkoswald is known locally as KO.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Robert Bowman's marriage circa 1750 Irthington.
« on: Saturday 17 January 15 09:21 GMT (UK)  »
Are you sure he married c1750? - there are two christenings earlier at Irthington, father Robert Bowman
Ann Bowman 15 Oct 1749 Irthington, father Robert Bowman
Robert Bowman 25 Oct 1747 father Robert Bowman.

Of the other children you mention - John seems to have died aged 66 years on 25 Sep 1826 Irthington.

The deaths at Irthington also record the following - whether this is yours I'm not sure:
Richard bur 24 Jun 1816, 51 years of Levensdale (so death date - age 3 years out, but as was often the case then mistakes did often happen with the correct age for various reasons).
There is also a death of a Robert Bowman - however he is too young to be your Robert as he would be born 1737, but worth mentioning if only to dismiss as the death of your Robert:
Robert 10 Apr 1827 Levensdale, 90 years.
Is there a chance that he could have married in Scotland? There's also a chance he could have married more than once.

Also there are various newspaper articles of a long lived Robert Bowman from Irthington (age wrong to be your Robert), but it was mentioned in the article that he was from a Roman Catholic family but he had changed his faith.

The original parish registers for Irthington and surrounds would possibly give a little more info, possibly a trade, or place of abode and it would be worth looking at these.  If you cannot travel to Carlisle Archive Centre, then you could order the records on microfilm from your nearest Latter Day Saints Library and they will order these for you so you can view them there. The LDS Libraries are nationwide and worldwide - I believe there is a small charge and that you have up to 3 months to look at them.

Another option is to look on CASCAT to see if there are any Wills of Bowmans in Irthington. You can order these from Carlisle for a small fee.

One option is for you to order the microfilm of the parish registers you wish you look at through your local Latter Day Saints Library, which they will get for you for a small fee and I think you usually have about 3 months to look at the records. The LDS libraries are in most countries. including many in the UK.

The following are early Wills/Admons of the Hugills which may be worth considering – from Carlisle Archive Service – I believe you can order these for a small fee.

For what its worth - the person who filled in the census form had not got a very good grasp of the spelling of villages - the person above on the census page is down as born Laysonby - correct spelling Lazonby, so its probable that he did not know how to spell Cotehill, so nearest spelling Coathill.
