I HAVE FOUND HER!

Ellen did become Ellen Heald, and had several children with Frederick Heald; Eileen was named Heald, and the rest were all called Hutton.

Ellen died in Nov, 1951 in New Norfork as a patient at the Asylum.

Now to fill in the missing years between 1910 and 1951.........hopefully the admission papers might tell me.

Many thanks to all of you who have so wonderfully helped in the hunt for Ellen.......muchly appreciated.

These days I have that much paperwork for some weddings that it often seems like overkill.

Siouxsie

POD comes about to much of official paperwork for Australians with the Quintex case and the late Christopher Skase.  late 1980s, into the 1990s...

I married in NSW in 1974, neither of us produced any formal official documents.  We were both known to the clergyman.

I have just spoken with several of my elderly rellies ... yes, NO documents would have been needed to 'prove' she was a widow,  yes, the clergy would likely have spent some time talking with her privately about her status as a widow ... and likely she would have confirmed her previous marriage was conducted by a clergyman of the same denomination ... sometimes clergy may have written to each other, perhaps a letter introducing her when she moved to the district etc...

The paperwork required by NSW BDM for officiating at marriages in this century is 'huge' compared back as recently as 1990s .... it got cumbersome in the mid 1990s ...  Back in the 1960s/1970s many couples were marrying in the communities where they had been born/raised, and church attendance was still the norm, so people actually knew people, watched friendships develop into courtships, and were anticipating the marriage .... Even in large cities like Sydney,  before 'Sunday' trading was the economic 'norm'  people went to Church on Sundays.   So, turn back the clock to the 1880s, 1890s,  Amelia has most likely been interviewed by a clergyman in 1889 who may well have suggested that she needs to report her then husband as 'missing' and thus the Police Gazette entry... then when nothing eventuated, the clergyman may have decided that marriage was a preferred state to 'co-habitation' ....

Pine Family.......many thanks........I have just spoken with the Cemetery, and alas, that one is a James Anthony.

And, Majm, she was striving for integrity.......and to maintain the Williams name for her daughter......I am surprised she ended up in Gawler, rather than returning to the family fold in Moonta........more mysteries to unravel.

Many thanks indeed to you both.

Ah, so you are telling me she could have rocked in, said she was a widow, and just like that, remarried!

As a marriage celebrant who has to sight a myriad of documents to identify a person, and their current marital status, this makes my eyes water.

So.........me thinking that I had to find a death between 1885 (when they married) and 1890 (when she remarried) is based on a false premise, and I can now broaden that search.

Wowsers.......and such an easy name to trace any vital records! LOL.

Many thanks

Thanks Majm,

I had the marriage reference number and the place details, but the SA records only show the date of the wedding to Henry, not that she was a widow.

Now the question is........when did James WILLIAMS die, if she married as a widow........or how did she have him declared dead (and where would I find that!!!)

I have looked at SA Archives on Divorce........but not mentioned there.

James has been a brick wall for many years.........one I had hoped to crack with some new information, but as I can't find an appropriate death record for him, then I am stumped.

Many thanks

He apparently deserted her in Moonta in Sept, 1885 and the warrant was listed in the SA Police Gazette in 1889.

She remarried in 1890.

Many thanks

I am trying to solve the mystery of Amelia Elizabeth's first husband, James, and I can't seem to find his death anywhere. The last two clues I had hoped might be him were debunked yesterday.

His wife Amelia Elizabeth remarried some 5 years after they were first married, and her second marriage was to Henry Edwin Hopkins in 1890. The certificate number is 165/136.

Can someone tell me if she marries as a widow?

I have found a South Australian police report from 1889 regarding his desertion, but to me that wouldn't have given her time to get divorced.

The only place I haven't been able to search around the relevant time period is Northern Territory.

Many thanks in advance,

Siouxsie

1886   157/58  WILLIAMS James  Frome

1887  161/208  WILLIAMS James  Adelaide

Many thanks,
