Canada / Re: William Gilbert Renner died 25 Sept 1928- where is he?
« on: Friday 15 December 23 12:32 GMT (UK)  »
He is in the Veterans Death Cards but unfortunately without a burial location!
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/mass-digitized-archives/veterans-death-cards-ww1/Pages/item.aspx?PageID=2817054
(page 902, as "W G Renner")

On his military records "true name John Bernard Thompson" has been written.

Which is curious because there is a John B Thompson in Woodlawn with a gravestone I would identify as a soldier's grave, and it has the same death date as your record for W G Renner.

When she married she was the daughter of "the late John Smith" in the newspaper:

OK Arolsen is up again.

There is a record "Iwan DIKI" and "Iwan DZIKI" which look from birthplace and birthdate to match other records for  "Jan Dziki"

It is the one for Iwan Dziki that lists parents:
Father Andrej , mother Marie Trufinowa
Born Tamanowice, Lwow, Poland, Last residence Radynice, Lwow, Poland.

South Africa / Re: Finding whereabouts of Great Uncle Albert Leonard New
« on: Sunday 10 December 23 01:09 GMT (UK)  »
Roy Townsend New does appear in Canadian archive as a home child, sent in 1920 by National Children’s Home.

The records might be held in local archives but there should be some info available about Roy, and possibly about Fanny, that mention Albert, as the location of the father/husband was often of interest to authorities (from the point of view that he should be paying for them if he was around).  If you're lucky they'll say something about where he was, or at least give you a better idea of when he left the area (if he did).

As to the Smee marriage - Albert James New and Maude Louise New are on the census togther in 1921 in Reading, so unless your man added 10 years to his age and a new middle name, not him.

I would not expect a birth record for 1926 to be available online. You would have to work out who still holds the records and what their requirements are for an application (could be in the local office still).

The place is probably Tamanowice which appears to be in Mościska area and would have been in Poland when Jan was born; it is now in the western part of Ukraine near the border with Poland. It appears to be quite small, probably the registration office was in some larger place nearby.

Arolsen archive search appears down for me right now but is another possible source.

Australia / Re: Evelyn Mavis (born Dyer -1919

It looks to me like Nurse Lloyd published a great number of similiarly worded notices for children born within her hospital - it may not have been driven by Lena or her family at all but simply a service provided (probably also a form of advertising for the nurse)

 - see here, 7 birth entries in a row (including Dyer)

She also advertised at times for foster/adoptive parents, so may have been the one to organise a placement
(just a couple of examples):

I find one reference in 1926 saying the Velox Rubber Co were to be known as the Velox Weatherproof Co.

Which leads to these entries in the National Archives:

Family History Beginners Board / Re: False Details on Birth Certificate?
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 11:27 GMT (UK)  »
Officially, for an illegitimate birth at that time, the father would have to accompany the mother to have both names on the certificate (at least in England and Wales).

Who was the informant in this case? The mother?

It was quite common to see falsehoods, because there was no requirement for documentary evidence to register a birth. Occasionally they turn up in court records.  Usually these involve just saying you were married to the father, or perhaps making up a husband/father out of whole cloth to avoid having that blank space.

Was this the source you've seen? Under married name Gamble.
It is possible that the child was stillborn, hence the lack of other records.
