Lancashire / Re: Angle Meadow - St Michael's Church. Manchester.

Geoff, I was attempting to be light hearted about correcting people who mistakenly call Angel Meadow "Angles Meadow", of course I know that Deansgate was not formerly Danesgate but thought I`d add a touch of idiocy.I don`t know where you live but perhaps you have heard something about the Manchester congestion charge and how the proposal got a resounding "no" from commuters especially who could end up paying £50+ per week to travel to work in inner city M/C.
Anyway Marks and Spencer were not where they are now but higher up Market Street, there were two former sites ;the first Penny Bazaar and then the store on the corner of Market St.and High St., part of Ryland`s building. I am very very old you see and remember lots of things but not where I have put my glasses or what I went upstairs for-I`ll have to get a faster stairlift -one that gets me to the top before I have forgotten what I was going up for!Cheerio and Happy Christmas. Viktoria.

Okay-okay so I am a smarty pants but just oneslip of the finger and history is lost. Not many people know that such a slip caused Danesgate to become Deansgate and has nothing to do with the Cathedral. It was called that because it was the route Vikings took on their way past Kendal`s to pillage and ravage the Romans at Castlefield before joining in the shindig at Peterloo where disgruntled Mancunians rioted against the increased charges at the toilets in nearby Albert Square. The Council gave in but then decided to levy a charge on all people going into Manchester to work---they had to pay to go to work!!!!! honestly -in  this day and age we can hardly believe it can we?but it is true . I can`t remember exactly what the next money-making stunt was but I seem to remember something about  a tax on the amount of air it was estimated people breathed  but I would have to look it up . Anyway that`s enough potted history for now. Lesson over . As they say once a teacher always a teacher . So a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to you all. listen for the Angles singing!!!. Viktoria.

Hi, check your status with G.R. for two months they had me as an ordinary member needing to buy credits so they would not let me access anything despite the fact that I had paid upfront as a Gold member with unlimited access. I did eventually sort it out and demanded they start my membership from when it was in order. I have not experienced a frozen screen lately but did some time ago before the changes however I find they have no records of people I found with no trouble on Ancestry.co, people I know existed-my grandparents for example. Better luck. Viktoria

Sorry to correct you but the area of Manchester you are interested in is not Angles meadow but Angel meadow , possibly from the dedication of the Church --St. Michael and all Angels--but of course there was also Angel St. again possibly from the Church dedication. I am not at all sure why this very poor area got such a nice name but I have always  been fascinated by it. Although it was so poor there are many people who remember family life there with affection and we can only admire the mothers especially who  brought up children who became decent hard working  people despite the extreme poverty and deprivation . Hope you enjoyed your walk,I think the best approach is from Ashley Lane and suddenly the Church gates are there. It has changed such a lot since the Council took away St. Michael`s Flags, the York stone flagstones which covered the mass burialground, and grassed it over. History has been lost. What a pity.Viktoria

I`ve sent you a message but it does not seem to have got through. It was to say I had walked along Annie St. today and 24 is still there. 1Alfred St. is the end of a row and it does look as if it could have been enlarged from two back to back houses--the back and front are exactly the same. I will send a photo as soon as I find out how to do that. Cheers . Viktoria.

Hi, When did your relatives live at Alfred St and Annie St,-how long ago?. Some houses were demolished in Annie St and there are quite new ones there. It is a smashing little street with the cleanest flagstones in Ramsbottom, all bleached . They are the original York Stone ones.I used to work at the school on Geoffrey St. I`ll try my best to get a photo but must admit to being a real geek and do not know how to send photos !!!!!!!.I will have to ask my son!One side of Annie St. is still in existence but the other side is where the new (10+years)houses are.I wonder why you thought it was Bear Alfred St..Could it have been back Alfred St? There were some back-to-back houses there, the ones that had no back door because they were joined to the house behind so had only one entrance but when the housing act came into force the dividing wall was opened and a door put in and two tiny houses became one larger one so what had been the front and only door of one became the back second door of the now larger house which now housed only one family where before there had been two. Are you still with me ?Have another look. Viktoria

Hi,See what you mean but she is standing and he is seated and she appears as tall as he is sitting so if he were standing he would be quite a bit taller than her. He looks quite a frail, delicate boy so perhaps that is the reason he seems younger. Hope you sort it out.Viktoria

Hi, I wonder if the fact there appear to be two girls and not enough boys could be due to the fact that it was the custom to dress all children as girls until the age of five. Would the dates for the "missing" son be right if the extra girl is really the missing boy  aged under five? Viktoria

I hate the word Relict too, its as if the widow was something rather than someone and was a bit of nothing of worth left behind when her husband died. It is almost as bad as suttee , practised in so me Asian countries  in former times, the widow was expected to throw herself on to her husband`s funeral fire to be burnt alive because she was considered of no worth whatsoever .A dreadful fate but given the way widows were treated even by their own sons it might have been the better of two alternatives . Thankfully not now practised. I also think it dead (sorry about the pun)mean that if a wife died first she often did not get a gravestone until after the husband had died even if she had predeceased him by many many years. Then the husband`s name was first on the gravestone and the long dead wife`s was after his like "oh  and by the way -- his wife is dead too" Shows the attitude of the time. There is still a lot of it about! Viktoria.
