Scotland / James Turner
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 19:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!

I'm trying to locate my Great Grandfather James Turner on the 1911 census and have found nothing so far! I have looked on Scotlands people and wasted a lot of credits looking up people that weren't him! I was just wondering whether there was any easy way of getting around this or will I have to just keep looking and wasting credits?!!!
Also the thing is i am not 100% sure if he was still in Scotland in 1911. He enlisted in 1914 and married in London in 1915 but was living in Earlston, Berwickshire in the 1901 census. I know you should never assume however I would imagine he left scotland when he enlisted and was posted down south. He was a bachelor when he married in 1915 and all of the James Turners I have found on the 1911 census so far were married. I have also searched the English 1911 census but to no avail! I hope somebody can help!

Family History Beginners Board / Help finding Great Grandfather's death
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 16:13 BST (UK)  »

Dear All,

As the title suggests I have been trying to find a record of my great grandfathers death and I have got nowhere! I have posted on here in the past and have had some great results so I thought I would see if anyone could help with this one?!!
His name was George French born 13th October 1883 in Oldbury, Worcester. He married My great grandmother Annie Baker on the 12th November 1924 in Southwark London. They had two children, Nancy born in 1926 and my grandmother Joan born in 1928. I have since discovered that Annie baker remarried a few times (this was her second marriage) and she remarried again on 25 July 1929.
Seeing as my grandmother was born in 1928 and his wife remarried in 1929 I did a rough search between 1927 and 1929 and none of the results seem to fit George French! He would have been in his mid 40's around that time and none of the ages match! As far as i'm aware they didn't divorce.
I have been told by uncles that he committed suicide and that he was a chef in a luxury London hotel but apart from that I know nothing! My grandmother was put into an orphanage at an early age and was very vocal about me looking up the family history so I never did much of her side until she passed away. Unfortunately I have no living relatives that can shed any light on this. I hope someone can help!!

« on: Saturday 11 September 10 15:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I was looking through some old family photos the other day and even though i've seen them lots of times I only just realised that 5 of the photos appear to be in the same studio with the same chair!! I just wondered if anyone else could look and see if i'm correct in thinking they were taken at the same time and also to give a rough date so I can try and identify who they are!!! Many thanks in advance for your help!

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Robinson look up
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 13:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am hoping someone will be able to help me and be able to look something up for me. Unfortunately I haven't got many firm details, but hoping someone will be able to help!
I am looking for one of my grandfather's siblings who died in infancy. The surname was Robinson and father's name was Edward James and mothers name was Lilian nee Seabrook.
That is where the facts end! All I have to go on is what my grandfathers sister has told me. We are almost certain they would have been born in Birmingham and my great aunt said her mother told her it was a boy.
I have found a George Robinson who died in Birmingham in 1909 Jul vol 6D P6 this fits in with the dates of when the other children were born and Lilian's father was George so maybe it could be him? There were two children that died in infancy and I have found a Hilda Robinson who i'm sure is one of the children. On the 1911 census it lists Edward and Lilian had lost one child and Hilda was born after the census was taken so i'm certain the child would have been born between 1907-1910.
I am quite new to this and unsure as to whether it's possible, but I was wondering if you look up records whether it lists the parents names as that would be the only way of knowing. I could order the certificates, but there are quite a few possibilities and don't want to order lots that are not what I need!
I hope I'm not asking the impossible! Many thank in advance for your help!

Family History Beginners Board / Help needed please!!
« on: Monday 12 July 10 17:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I was speaking to my Great Aunt today (Grandfathers sister) and she was telling me that her mother and father had two children who died in infancy. She said she was sure it was a boy and a girl however some other family members don't agree. Of course It wasn't something my great grandmother ever spoke about (apart from saying she lost two children) and my great aunt would love me to find out their names and causes of death to put her mind at rest.
I thought it would be relatively easy to find, but it is not at all and wondered if anyone could help me?
I am not 100% sure if they were born in Warwickshire (i'm certain one was) but my great Aunt says they were both born in Warwickshire.
Unhelpfully I don't know any names and only have a date range, but was wondering whether it would be possible to identify them from records from their parents names?
I have found my great grandparents in the 1911 census and they were living in Villiers Street in Birmingham and it lists them as having lost one child by then. My great aunt is certain the two were born between her two sisters who were born in 1907 and 1912.
So if my calculations are correct one would have been born between the 1911 census and 1912 and the other between 1907 and 1911.
My great Grandparents were Edward James and Lilian Robinson although I am unsure when they moved to Birmingham. I know it's a big ask and I probably wont be able to get far, but I thought it would be worth a shot! I have been amazed at the help I have got from here before even by giving the tiniest of details!!! I would normally take the plunge and order a certificate, but there are so many I would be doing it for years!!
I just wondered if it's possible to trace them by their parents names?
Thank you very much for your help and time in advance

Armed Forces / Help with a soldier
« on: Friday 21 May 10 17:44 BST (UK)  »
I recently came across a soldiers account book that belonged to my grandfather and was looking to find out more about the soldier who's book it is. I have no idea who he is or why my grandfather had his book!
The details I have from his book are he was Called Robert Spurling and served in the 62nd foot regiment and his number was 1565. According to the book he served in the Crimean war 10 July 1855 to 14 June 1856 and in the East Indies from 21 Sept 1857. From what I can make out from the faded writing he was awarded the following:
Crimean war medal with one clasp
Crimean Turkish medal (?)
Indian Mutiny medal, 2 clasp, for relief of Lucknow (?) (I have a scan of it on another post but not sure how to link it!)
I was just wondering how I would go about finding out more about him. I understand there are medal rolls at Kew, but wondered if there was any other way of finding out more rather then going to Kew! Many thanks in advance!

Suffolk / Spurling
« on: Friday 21 May 10 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!

I recently came across a document belonging to my grandfather and upon reading it I realised that I don't have a clue who the person is! I am looking into it to see whether there is a family connection or if my grandfather bought it (more than likely!!)
Anyway it's a soldiers account book belonging to a Mr. Robert Spurling. It lists him as being born in the parish of great Baylins (Which i think may be great Bealings) in the county of Suffolk near Woodbridge.
It lists him as having two brothers 1 older, George, and one younger, William. his mothers name is crossed out but it looks to me like Anna. From his date of enlistment I have worked out his date of birth to be about October 1837.
I was just wondering if anyone else knew anything about this family? I have had a quick look at the census lists but being a beginner I haven't had much luck so far!!
I discovered that family through my grandmother originated from Suffolk so I'm wondering if there is any connection to my family through that!!
Thank you all in advance for your help!

Family History Beginners Board / Some help again please!!
« on: Monday 19 October 09 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!
I'm sorry i'm a bit of a pain, but I need a little help and wondered if any of you pro's would be able to help me out?!
I was looking up my 2 x G grandfather George French in the 1881 census and I found him living in Oldbury Worcestershire with his wife and young son. They are also living with a lodger by the name of James Williams. I noticed he was 78 and unemployed which I found a bit strange!
Anyway completely by accident I scrolled up on the census and the neighbour was a Sarah French. I looked at her dob and her children and it turns out to be George's Mother and my 3xG grandmother! She was living with her 2 children and also with a lodger also with the Name of James Williams age 60!!
Then it clicked Sarah's maiden name was Williams! I think I may have found my 4xG grandfather and sarah's brother, but I can't find the evidence to back it up! I was wondering if anyone could see if they could make a connection!
I looked up Sarah's birth and found a Sarah born 1827 in Tipton, Staffs with a father James, but there were lots of Sarah Williams born in that area at the time so not sure!
All I know is she was called Sarah Williams, born 1827/1828 in Tipton Staffs and Married a George French.

Many thanks in advance for all your help!
