Family History Beginners Board / I've confused myself (again!!)
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 23:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all!
Like the title suggests i've gone and confused myself and am hoping someone will be able to help me out! As usual I am probably making a mountain out of a mole hill!
My great great grandfather was a John Turner b c.1850 in Scotland. He married Ann Cunningham and they had 6 children:
Annie (c.1872) James (1873) William (c.1876) Betsy (c.1878) Isabella (c.1880) and Robina (c.1886) They were all born in Galashiels Scotland apart from one who was born in Glasgow. I have found them all on the 1871 census to the 1901 census and they all lived and worked in Galashiels until at least 1891.
I found John's wife Ann Cunningham in the 1851 census as a girl so I decided to look for her on the 1861 census. Instead of putting in Ann Cunningham I put Ann Turner in Error and I came accross an entry that is really puzzling me. The entry is as follows:
James Turner (c.1823) M Isabella and had 3 children and adopted one. They are:
William (c.1850) Ann (1852) Isabella Agnes Hogg (c.1855 adopted) and Robina (c.1858) The children were all born in Galashiels (apart from Isabella) and the family were living there when the census took place in 1861.
Like I said I am probably putting 2 and 2 together and making 5 but it seems a huge coincidence to me and it's screaming out to me but I can't understand why! To me Robina is a very rare name but then maybe it wasn't in Scotland at that time.
I understand that Turner is a very common name and there may have been a few living in Galashiels at that time, but all with the same first names too?
From previous experience I have found that families normally named their children after family members so that's why it's ringing bells at me!!
I hope I'm not being stupid and someone can help! Many thanks in advance!!
Daniel
