Family History Beginners Board / Re: Orphanages
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 00:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply and welcome  :)
Yes my grandmother was born in 1928 so wont show up on any census yet. I would love to get her Birth certificate, but to be honest i wouldn't know where to start! She's not too sure exactly where she was born although it was London. As far as i'm aware her mother was still alive when she was sent away. She told me her mother was married 3 times and had quite a few children. They were living in a 1 bedroom flat and according to my grandmother they were too much to cope with and were sent away. She doesn't even know her mothers name as she was 4 when it happened.

Hertfordshire / SEABROOK Family - Abbots Langley
« on: Wednesday 12 November 08 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am currently researching the Seabrook family from Abbots Langley, Herts. My great grandmother was Lilian Seabrook born around 1881 in Bedmond (married name Robinson) and her father was George Seabrook born around 1849 in Abbots Langley. I have Lilian's Marriage certificate and it states George was a Juice keeper???? It's very hard to read! I believe George's Father was also called George and may have been born around 1816 again in Abbots Langley. I was wondering if anyone had any further information on this family? Thank you in advance.

« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
First of all I'm a complete beginner so i apologise if i sound silly. Recently i found a ww1 medal that belonged to my great granddad and have looked up his medal card. I asked my grandmother about him and all she knew what that she thinks he was from Galashiels and his wife was called Lily. I was wondering how i would find out more? His name is James Turner and at a guess would have been born around 1890?  Unfortunately his son, my grandfather is dead so that is all i know.Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Orphanages

Hi,
I am a complete beginner when it comes to researching my family tree so I apologise if i sound silly! I have many birth, marriage and death certificates on my mothers side but on my fathers side i know nothing. After talking to my grandmother i discovered she was sent to an orphanage at a very early age. I was just wondering whether records for orphans exist and how i could get hold of them? I know the address of the orphanage but by doing a quick google search i have found nothing. I have asked my grandmother questions, but it was a distressing time for her and she is only prepared to give me basic details. Thank you in advance for you help.
