What a lovely church. I am not sure if it is the right James Allan who was buried here in 1852. Would local people be buried here even if they weren't Roman Catholic? I haven't found a burial record for his wife, Jane Rutherford, in this church and she died in Farnachty in 1861.

Hi,
Just so that you can possibly rule this out, I believe that the death record in 1852 is for my 3 x Great Grandfather James Allan who was married to Margaret Thompson.  Their marriage was recorded both in the Catholic Register - Preshome, St Gregory's at Buckie and the Rathven Old Parish Register in 1831 and they lived in Clochan, Enzie. I have found birth and baptism records in the Catholic records for their children as well. Hope this helps

Ps:I would love to know of any living descendants.

hello marharvard, I'm one of the descendants of the Burgess family that Forfarian was talking about...I'm not a direct descendant of George and Isabella but Adam Burgess, my 2 x great grandfather was Isabella's brother so we share their parents - Alexander Burgess and Anne Stuart/Stewart. Unfortunately, I don't have any information which would help on George and Isabella's family but do have quite a lot on the Burgess family which I'm happy to share )

Hello marharvard,

I'm coming late into this post but have not been doing much family research recently.
My great great grandfather was Adam Burges/s born 1838 at Glass, Aberdeenshire - he was Isabella's sister.

Forfarian has already correctly posted the line back from Isabella to Alexander Burges and Isabella MacInnes..though the marriage entry has Isabella Innes....(can be MacInnes or Innes) -  if you would like any more info back to Alexander Burges and Isabella Innes, let me know and I'll PM you the access code to my tree  :)

Thank you for posting these extracts Ev, they make fascinating reading.
My great great aunt and her family made the journey to Utah in 1868.  I can trace her life from Aberdeenshire to the USA through the records and newspaper accounts (a harrowing account of her husband and son drowning in the Weber river in 1875) but these are mainly facts...it's wonderful that you have found something much more personal, however distressing, that gives an insight into William's life and those times.

Hi Andrew,
Welcome to Rootschat  :)
You could also try writing to the Press and Journal http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/  It is one of the main North East of Scotland newspapers and covers the Elgin area too.
I don't know which University he went to but 2 of the main ones nearest to Elgin  would be in Aberdeen...if he did go to one of them then someone might recognise him. Another possible might be the University of the Highlands and Islands in Inverness which is also covered by the P & J.

Hi Heather,

I don't know if you have seen the entry in the Libindx site http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp  but a "people search" for Jeannie Reid shows that she lived at Lochs of Urquhart and that John Allan was from Orton, Rothes. The information would have been taken from the marriage announcement in the Banffshire Herald in 1914 which is available from the site for a small fee. No mention of parents - they would have been added if the announcement had given that information -  but the locations might help.

regards
