Lancashire Lookup Requests / John Cartwright in the 1861 Census
« on: Monday 31 January 05 13:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can anybody help?

I'm trying to trace a John Cartwright in the 1861 Census. He was born in Nantwich in 1837.

In 1851, he was living in Nantwich, Cheshire, aged 13 as an apprentice shoemaker. Then he disappears.

He turns up again, it seems,  in the 1871 Census,  living in East Wellhead, Heeley, Hallam, Sheffield, aged 32, as a boot and shoemaker. By this time, he was married to Sarah Ann, also aged 32. She was born in Sheffield.

Later censuses seem to place him in Northampton (1881), Liverpool (1891) and although he was deceased by this time, his family were in Wallasey in 1901. If it's one and the same person, I've no idea why he moved around such a lot.

In a sense, as he seemed to move around a lot (?) he could be virtually anywhere. However, neighbouring counties are as good a starting place as anywhere else. (I'm assuming that it's possible to search census returns coutywide??).

Anyway, if anyone could help, it would be really wonderful.

Thanks

Neil

Cheshire / Pubs in Nantwich
« on: Sunday 30 January 05 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Some years ago (about 20!), I gave a copy of a list of pubs in Nantwich to a friend. They dated from either Victorian times, or the turn of the Century (1900). I think I got it from Nantwich Library, but I'm not certain.

Anyway, he's asked me if he could have another copy, as he's lost his. Problem is, I can't find mine either.

Simple, you might say. Go and ask at Nantwich Library. Problem is, I now live in France.

If anyone has access to this list, could they possibly mail me a copy?

Thanks

Completed Census Requests / Can anyone find a John Cartwright in the 1861 Census?

But there's this really frustrating gap between 1851 and 1871.

If anyone could help it would be really wonderful.

Completed Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / John Cartwright, Northampton, 1881
« on: Sunday 30 January 05 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, can anybody help?

I'm trying to trace a John Cartwright in the 1881 Census. In 1851, he was living in Nantwich, Cheshire, aged 13 as an apprentice shoemaker.

He turns up again in the 1871 Census - he was living in Sheffield, aged 32, as a boot and shoemaker. By this time, he was married to Sarah Ann, also aged 32. She was born in Sheffield.

However, I believe he re-married a Sarah Carroll and moved to Northampton.

If anyone could do me a quick look-up, I'd be most grateful!

Thanks

Some info from the 1861 Census would help close down a 20 year gap, so it would be great if anyone could help.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Frank Spencer emigrated to Sri Lanka
« on: Tuesday 11 January 05 22:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the family of Sam Spencer (born 1853, Cleckheaton). His brother, Frank (born 9 Feb 1902), went to live in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and is apparently buried in Colombo.

Don't know when or why he went there. Any ideas where I could look?

Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Employee Records at Dewsbury Royal Infirmary
« on: Tuesday 11 January 05 22:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to trace the present-day family of Sam Spencer, who was born in 1893 (died in France in 1953). His sister Eva (born 2 June 1908) was a nurse at the Dewsbury General Infirmary, Moorlands Road, Dewsbury, according to a copy of a letter she sent to Sam (22 May 1953), shortly before his death.

I don't know if she was married, had children, or whatever. If I could find a 1953 address for her, other than the hospital, it would be a start. I assume she retired around 1968. (Any leads here? But without a possible married name, it's difficult). I have photos of her, if anyone worked at the DRI at around the same time.

Does the Dewsbury Royal Infirmary still exist?

Can anyone help?

Thankyou

Neil
