Thankyou Poppies, that's wonderful!

One thing you may be able to shed some light on (or maybe not).

My uncle Seymour (sadly died a couple of years ago) always said that his Grandad (ie Joseph Owen snr - husband of Clara) was the Molecatcher of Wem. He was proud because he kept and treasured his 'molecatcher' spade.

To be honest, it always sounded a bit fanciful to me - firstly, we knew nothing of a Wem connection, and secondly, when we found a connection, it was the Powell family, not the Owen one.

However, perhaps I was too dismissive. Maybe there is some credence, but perhaps he mixed up his grandfather with another famliy member.

Have you heard anything remotely familiar?

And thanks again for the info!!!!

Hello Poppies,

That's fantastic!!!!

Yes, Clara Powell was my great grandmother on my mother's side.

I'll tell you what I have - but it's not much:

My mum is (Marian) Wendy Owen, born Nantwich, 1932. Her father was Joseph Owen (Baddington, 1900) who married Jane Edge (Nantwich 1894).

Joseph (whom I was very close to)'s parents were Clara Powell and Joseph Owen (both born c1869).

I've then got Clara's parents as Samuel Powell (1828, Hordley, shrops) and Emma (c1836).

Samuel's parents were, I believe,  William and Mary, but I have nothing else.

Yes, it's the same Clara Powell.

Any information we could exchange would be fantastic.

THANKYOU!!

Hello

Can you give me any information at all on Sampson Cartwright, born Nantwich 1784, died Willaston 1864, or on his son, Sampson Edward Cartwright, born Nantwich, 1809, died London, 1891?

I understand that Sampson Edward emigrated to South Africa, possibly in the 1850s, and possibly taking his son, John Dean Cartwright with him. I have no idea how long he stayed there, or when or why he returned.

Or anything on William Cartwright, born Willaston c1796?

Any information on anything at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, I do, but thanks all the same.

There was also a thriving shoe business in Nantwich, so there's a story somewhere. It's how to get at it????

Thanks again

Thanks Carol, that's really interesting.

He was 23 years old, married (could they marry at 16, 18 or even 21 in 1861?) but living as a lodger in Preston (an hour or so away on the motoraway even now).

So, it begs the question, where was his wife? Where and when did they marry? And of course, who was she?

I suppose bigamy was pretty common in those days - I wonder if that sheds any light on him constantly being on the move?

If he was a bigamist, what would the penalty have been?

Or is there something altogether more interesting??????

Thanks
