Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Birth Certificate Amendment
« on: Monday 08 August 16 17:46 BST (UK)  »
I've just received a birth certificate. Box 7 reads:
"X the mark of Penelope Burn
Mother
(12) Occupier (the word occupier has been crossed out)
4 Edwards Court
Princess Street
Chester"

on the right hand side of box 10........has been written: "Twelve" with the initials of the registrar. The 12 obviously applies to the crossing out of "occupier" and inserting "mother"

Is the number 12 associated with this kind of amendment? If not, what does it mean?

Thanks

Donegal / Leeper Family
« on: Friday 15 July 16 19:37 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to find the baptism for my mother Muriel Leeper b 1928 registered Stranolar. Father was Oliver Leeper and Marion Kilpatrick. Birth certificate shows she was born in Cappry - which appears to be the name of a road. Also interested in the baptisms of any siblings together with marriages for Murial and any siblings............
Have these records been returned to a Records Office, as in the UK? Where would I find these records please?
Thanks

I've searched for and found Herbert Johnson b 1889 living in Carshalton, Surrey with his wife Alice - alongside her name is the name Bachelor.......... she married someone with that surname after the death of Herbert some years after 1939. Coincidence?

For windows users I recommend the Legacy free program which I've used for years and years and think is great (I'm a researcher, not a geek!) - but what is there available for MAC users?
All suggestions welcome

Census and Resource Discussion / National Probate Calendar
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found an entry for a relative who died in 1927 in the National Probate Calendar. Under the entry is written "further grant 7th December 1939". The entry in 1939 is identical to the one in 1927 but adds "Former grant 1927".  Whichever I order, I guess it will be the same - but can you confirm I need to apply for the one in 1939 as this was proven???

Also.......... in both entries the relative is shown as "Mary Evans (wife of Samuel Evans)" - is it correct to assume that Samuel Evans was still alive at this time, otherwise Mary would be referred to as widow of Samuel Evans??

London and Middlesex / Where are the baptisms?
« on: Tuesday 13 January 15 16:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have three generations of ancestors - of whom the third generation were reportedly devoutly religious.

They are:
Samuel Orange Lloyd b 1829 s/o George William and Mary Ann. He and his three siblings were baptised in St James' Westminster between the years 1823 and 1829 and all in the month following their births. One sibling died aged two, buried St James', Westminster, two have not been traced, which leaves Samuel Orange Lloyd as above. He married in St Peter's Church Saffron Hill in 1859, then had nine children (per the 1911 census) of whom seven have been traced AND NO baptisms found. IF I could trace the baptisms of the children, I feel sure this could lead to breaking the huge brickwalls I have with the parents of Samuel and/or parents of his wife Martha Brown.
The only clues for their religious persuasion are the marriages found for their children:
William Samuel Lloyd b 1860 married in St John's Church, Parish of Bethnal Green in 1883
Alice Lloyd b about 1865 - still a spinster in 1911
Frederick William Lloyd b abt 1867 married in St John the Baptist Hoxton in 1869
Arthur Joseph Lloyd b abt 1869 married 1893 - registered Islington - no certificate obtained
Bessie Lloyd b 1871 married in St Marks Church Clerkenwell
The next child died in 1892 and the final child was still a spinster in 1911

Of the three children who families I have traced, no baptisms have been found.
Bessie Lloyd is my great grandmother and is remembered by a cousin who believes they were strict baptists. I suspect however that the earlier generations were possibly congregationalists or baptists.
I have yet to find a reason for Samuel's middle name of Orange.......he is frequently recorded as Samuel William Lloyd, but a full analysis of all his records concludes that Samuel Orange and Samuel William are the same person.

Any ideas?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / St Joseph's Orphanage, Romsey
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
Any ideas where I can see admission and discharge records for the above, and perhaps other orphanages in Romsey circa 1927/1929? There was a previous thread about this and the poster was advised to check www.romseynet.org - which is no longer available.

« on: Thursday 04 December 14 13:05 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a baptism for Esther Sarah Cawson Lovell in 1858 in Dittisham, Devon. Parents are Reuben and Isabella - image available on Find My Past. In the left hand margin are the names of the grandfathers. In the margin to the right are two other names which I can't decipher. Can anyone help please?

« on: Wednesday 30 April 14 09:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the grave of someone who died in Holdenhurst in 1881. Can anyone suggest where I can check burial records and cemetaries. Also confirm the parishes in 1881?

Many thanks
