London and Middlesex / Earl of Lonsdale
« on: Friday 15 January 10 08:04 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received a will for my Thomas Ridding. Some of it I can't decipher but the gist is he left everything to his wife. BUT he is referred to as servant (or steward) to the Earl of Lonsdale. There are two words before which may be Right Honourable.

It starts.....
In the name of God Amen, Thomas Ridding of Brown Street Grosvenor Square in the Parish of Saint George Hanover Square in the County of Middlesex servant(?) to the xxx xxx the Earl of Lonsdale being of sound mind memory and understanding etc etc

The will was proved at London on the 1st day of July 1819.

I'm surprised to find that only his wife, Sarah Ridding,  is mentioned as in other wills I've seen the wife is provided for during her lifetime after which a will usually names another person, usually a child. Thomas Ridding's grandson Joseph Brown was christened on 20 June 1819 and although the child  lived for less than 10 years, the parents (Thos Ridding's daughter and husband) lived until the 1850/60's.

Any thoughts?

United States of America / Re: Florence Moody
« on: Monday 11 January 10 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jorose

Thanks for replying. The records fit, there's a death for Florence Phillips in 1892 followed by the marriage to Pauline. Fred was born 1890, in 1930 he's in Cook Co, he says his mother was born Germany (which Pauline was and Florence wasn't), I'll need to follow the whole family through to see if he's mentioned anywhere.

Thanks again

Linda

United States of America / Florence Moody
« on: Monday 11 January 10 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
Further to my previous postings about Fred and Oliver Moody, I'm now trying to find their sister Florence. She was born December 1869 in Hackney and was in the 1871 census in Hackney and the 1881 census in Melksham, Wiltshire with her parents and sister on both occasions. Her sister died in Melksham in 1886, her mother in 1887 and her father in 1890. I cannot find either a marriage or a death record for her and cannot find her in 1891, 1901 or 1911.

Two of her brothers have been identified in the US - Fred in Denver Colorado until his death in 1900 (for whom I cannot find an obituary) and Oliver in Chicago until his death in 1940 - his obituary doesn't mention a sister.

There is a marriage for Florence Moody to Walter Phillips on 6 May 1889 in Cook, Illinois - her age 19, his age 23, but I cannot find Florence and Walter Phillips in any US census.

There are two New York Passenger List records which may or may not be my Florence.

Arrival on 15 Aug 1887 on ship Alaska - age 17
or arrival on 8 Feb 1907 on ship Baltic aged 38 and 9 mths, born London. Possibly going to 212 E 46 Street - or this address may be for the passenger listed above Florence.

Any ideas where I go from here?

Europe / Re: France - overseas deaths
« on: Friday 25 December 09 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Geoff

Merry Christmas.
The death happened in Cameroon, Africa.
With a British Citizen, the death would be registered with the Consul and be indexed in British Overseas deaths. With a French citizen, would the death be registered/recorded with the French Consul and if so, how would a certificate be obtained?

Europe / France - overseas deaths

Would anyone know if France has an overseas death index? I'm researching a death in 1964 possibly registered with the French authorities in Cameroon.

This whole family puzzles me! James and Mary Jane married in 1845 in Ireland. If Louisa's age is right, she could have been born there too.

Thank you both for that information. The 1861 is on RG9/168/130 - transcribed Lloydd.

Most of the missing 1851 Lancashire census is on Findmypast but a search there fails to show them.

I can't find this family in the 1851 and can't understand why the ages are wrong in 1861.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: How do I order or see a Will

I'm hoping it was the help guides at the top of the London and Middlesex boards you were referring to when you commented on the London resources as useful?

Valda

Yes - they're excellent!
