London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: How do I order or see a Will
« on: Monday 21 December 09 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Valda - I've registered and I've received a password by email. When I go back to the site it tells me I'm already longed on, so the password isn't needed! Despite trying for some time I have totally failed to find anywhere that I can either download or order the will. After phoning them I'm told they have to send me an application form!

It's hard to imagine a more confusing and badly worded site.

Wish me luck with ordering as I think I may need it!

Linda

I've just found a will from a link given in one of the excellent London Resources:

Occupation: Servant
County: Middlesex
Parish: Saint George, Hanover Square
Address: Brown Street, Grosvenor Square
July 1819
Folio/Page: Monthly Entry 43

How do I go about getting a copy?

Berkshire / Marriages in Clewer, Windsor
« on: Monday 14 December 09 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Just received, a marriage certificate in 1867 in the parish church of Clewer for my William Jones b 1819 in Clewer but found in Hackney from 1841 thru 1891. I thought returning to his pob would break down this brick wall and have quickly looked up the witnesses to the marriage: Thomas Roake and Eliza Lipscombe only to find they are the Parish Clerk and a Pew Opener in 1871.

Does anyone else have these witnesses to marriages in Clewer? I'd like to confirm they were unconnected to my William Jones.

United States of America / Roberts - Wales to US

Following my posts about Edward Roberts in Kankakee, Illinois I have now been sent his obituary from the wonderful folk in Kankakee which states: "He is survived by a nephew, David Roberts of Herscher and three nieces. Mrs Karl Stephens and Mrs Russell Lucas, both of California and Mrs George Winklemeyr of Missouri."

David Roberts of Herscher was the son of Thomas David Roberts, brother of Edward. But as I'm still missing two brothers, William and Robert, the nieces could well be their children. This is a 1950 obituary and the three nieces would have been born post 1900 and married around 1920-1930.

I've searched what records I can - particularly for Winklemeyr, and found nothing. How do I trace the nieces?

Apologies for delay in responding and many thanks for all the information you've found. I really appreciate that.

I've now looked at 1920 and found Edward and Margaret in Pilot next to Thomas which confirms there were two Edward and Margaret Roberts around.

I'd agree that the passport application 1920 for Edward from Kankakee is also him.

Thanks for finding those deaths - they sound right. I've emailed the Kankakee Library to make enquiries about obtaining the obituary for Edward.

Linda

I wonder if the RAOK volunteers have access to naturalisation records and what kind of information they include. I'll look at this a little more before getting in touch.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm getting horribly confused so hoping that just by typing this out I'll be able to figure things out but I have now discounted Edward and Eva from my Roberts clan.

I'm missing Edward Roberts born 1864/5, s/o Edward and Harriet Roberts. I have him here in the 1901:
1901 Census: Croesfoel Farm, Esclusham Below, Denbigh
Harriet Roberts, Head, Widow, 69, Farmer, Llanganhafal, Ruthin
Edward Roberts, Son, S, 35, Farmers Son, Llanganhafal, Ruthin
Harriet Mary Roberts, Daur, S, 24, Denbigh, Wrexham

There's a 1911 entry for Harriet M Roberts in Wrexham and a marriage for Harriet M Roberts in Sept 1911 to either Walter Edwards or Edward Evans.

Harriet and Edward's brother Thomas David Roberts is in Illinois, Kankakee from 1900 through 1930 when the place name is shown as Herscher. He married Eva and had a child David. Other missing brothers include William and Robert (last seen 1881).

There is an Edward E Roberts married to Margaret (Owens) in Cook, Chicago from 1900 through 1930 also born 1864/5 pob Wisconsin. From 1910 through 1930 he is a Railroad Engineer.

In 1930 there's another Edward Roberts in Illinois, Kankakee, Herscher aged 65, (1865) Vet, born Wales, immigrated 1888. This Edward Roberts is enumerated next door to my Thomas D Roberts b 1871 and is a prime candidate for my missing Edward apart from his date of immigration.

Going back to Edward and Margaret - he applied for a passport on 25/5/1920 in Kankakee, Illinois for himself and wife Margaret. Says he was born Wales on 10th January 1864 and his father was Edward Roberts. Residence Chicago 1888 - 1905 and Herscher 1906-1920. Naturalised on 27th January 1906. Intending to leave US from Montreal sailing on SS Corsican 17th July 1920.

Border crossings from Canada to US October 1920 - are Edward and Margaret. Destination to friend Edward Roberts, Hersher, Ill. Nearest relative in country from which passenger came: Sister - Mrs Edwards, Bryn Llewelyn, Abergele Rd, Colwyn Bay.

UK Incoming passengers 26th July 1920 Corsican are:
Dr E Edwards, 56, Vetinary and Mrs E Edwards, 56, housewife, destination Colwyn Bay.

There are obviously two Edward's here but the border crossing in 1920 links them and ties in a sister, Mrs Edwards - possibly Harriet. Of the two Edwards, one is a vet, the other is a railroad engineer. All the information so far links to the railroad engineer who is married to Margaret, except the UK incoming passengers 26 July 1920 Corsican, Vet, destination Colwyn Bay. That information links to the passport application then to the border crossing and marriage to Margaret.

I'm going round in circles - and I've yet to find William and Robert!

Any help appreciated.

There's an image on A***y which I can't read. Could someone please have a look and let me know what they think the name of the ship is?

Search for Edward Roberts b 1864+/-2 born Wales. It's in their Canada, Ocean Arrivals (Form 30A) 1919-1924. There are 4963 images and it's number 832. Edward Roberts, 47 and his wife Eva are travelling, and the ship's name is .....Matura?? It also gives his previous address in Canada which looks like Slebartwyn?, Alberta  and he's going to somewhere which looks like Probable, Alberta.  Can someone clarify these place names please?
Finally, at the bottom of the form is a stamp "Melbourne" - what is that about?

Canada / Re: Fred Moody - missing
« on: Thursday 03 December 09 09:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jacqui

That's a huge amount of information - thank you.
I followed the link you gave and found Chester in 1930:
1930 Census: Denver, Colorado
Chester Fr Moody, Head, 45, Patrolman, Police Department
Marguaritte Moody, Wife,

Which is strange given the divorce in 1923. Are there any records for Policemen in Denver?

I also found Chester's WWI Draft Registration card on which he's shown as Chester Fredrick Moody, and a death record for Sept 1981 giving the address 80211 Denver, Denver, Colorado.

Then I searched for Wilfred and found him in 1920 with wife Ethel but in 1930 he's a roomer in Los Angeles working as a Fireman.

Then.....I found a record for Wilfred Wayne Moody - US National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers - enlistments 1917 Denver US Navy. He's described as being in a Constitutional Psychopatic state!
- he states he's divorced; born 13 Feb 1893 Denver, occupation Clerk, nearest relative is Mrs E Moody, Mother, 2557 West 46th Ave, Denver. Discharged 2 Mar 1933.
I've also found another researcher for Wilfred Wayne Moody, but their records show him married to Margaret and died 1930!

Here's hoping I get a reply from the WWMoody contact.

Thanks again

Linda

Hi Debbie

Thanks for all that information. My Frederick Henry Moody was born 22 Nov 1853 in Trowbridge. He was the s/o Jonah and Elizabeth. His brother Oliver, who was born in London, died in Chicago and his obituary says he went to the US at 17 and settled in Chicago at 27. So he must have been wandering around for 10 years - possibly with his brother.

The birth of Frederick Hall Moody you've mentioned was registered in Middlesex in 1853.
