Canada / Fred Moody - missing
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 06:45 GMT (UK)  »
I found the immigration records for my missing Frederick and Oliver Moody on the Canadian Passenger List:
Fred Mooky born abt 1854.
Date of Arrival: 19 Oct 1879
Vessel:- Mississippi
From Liverpool, England to Quebec
Age given 25

I'm sure the above must be my Fred as he's travelling with Oliver (who later turned up in Illinios.

The only other thing I've found for Fred is a death record:
Frederick H. Moody - Ontario Deaths 1869-1947
Birth 1854 - England
Death 26 January 1890 - Toronto, York, Ontario

His year of birth was in fact 1853; full name Frederick Henry Moody.

Anyone have any ideas how to find out more about him?

I cannot believe the amount of information that can be found. I'm on the people search website and have found an Allan Jeffrey Gillespie aged 54 in Chicago. There's no Janice Gillespie there, but there is a Donald! Janice Gillespie lives in Constance Avenue, Chicago

There's also a 38 yr old Kimberley Stevens.
Darius C Franche is now aged 60

There's soooo much information there

Hi Susan

I found that one yesterday, but I've only just figured it out!
So Donald Rosback, son of Minnie and Herbert, married Geneva. Their children were Thomas, Jean (also known as James?) married to Thompson; and Janice (married to Gillespie) ((where does the name Allan fit in).

I've now found:
1979-10-16
Chicago Tribune (IL)

Edition: Chicago Tribune
William Leroy Moody, suddenly, Oct 13, 1979, in Chicago, loving father of Kimberly Stevens and loving stepfather of Barbara Moody Snow; grandfather of Brian MacKenzie Moody; fond uncle of Darius C. Franche III. Memorial service Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1979, 4 p.m., at St. Chrysostom Church, 1422 N. Dearborn Pkwy. Memorials may be sent to St. Chrysostrom Church and the Art Institute of Chicago. Thanks Susan. I found that yesterday. Also found a marriage notice for the son of Mrs Minnie Rosback, who I may have found on facebook and hope he's going to get back to me!
Florence's husband Charles W Jones, was a partner in Arthur Andersen - he died in 1970:
Services for Charles W. Jones, 80, of 2320 Linden av., Highland Park, a retried partner of the Arthur Andersen & Co., public accounting firm of Chicago, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel at 1787 Deerfield Rd., Highland Park. Mr. Jones, Who retired in 1959, died Tuesday in the Highland Park Hospital. Surviving are a son, Kenneth; a daughter, Mrs. Carol Hoover; and nine grandchildren.

Any ideas on getting touch with Mrs Carol Hoover and/or Kenneth Jones?

Just seen your post on Leroy Moody - thanks, that's great! I'll bet William is William Leroy Moody.

Lisa - thanks, yes I found that marriage. I have a lot more to discuss with you on Oliver - I'll message you on that.

Sandra - That entry for Florence - I searched and found Florence arriving on 8 Feb 1907 Ship - Baltic - Liverpool/New York.  She's aged 38 yrs and 9 mths. Under occupation, "attendant" has been crossed out and "nurse" entered. Her entry only has "non immigrant alien" and "whether ever before the in US" she answers "yes N.Y." Whether going to join a relative or friend - can you see if the "Home, 212 E 46 St" has been dittoed from above?

With your entry in 1887 and the one I found in 1907, looks like she was back and forth. I've searched all the UK census and cannot find her. The US census has only one possible - in 1900 - the age is 4 years out and immigration date states 1889. Not sure where to go next on this, but I'd appreciate another eye on the 1907.

Lisa, thanks so much for your help - and yours too Sandra.

I'm sure these must be my Frederick and Oliver as they are both missing after the 1871 census:
1871 Census: RG10 - 36 Wick Rd, South Hackney
Jonah Moody, Head, M, 43, Police Constable, Wilts Hilperton
Elizabeth Moody, Wife, M, 45, Boot Binder, Wilts Trowbridge
Henry Moody, Son, S, 19, Shopman, Trowbridge Wilts
Fredk Moody, Son, S, 17, Apprentice Cabinet Maker, Wilts Trowbridge
Martha Moody, Daur, 14, Milliner, Middx, Hackney
Oliver Moody, Son, 12, Scholar, Middx Hackney
Alice Moody, Son, 9, Scholar, Middx Hackney
Edward Moody, Son, 7, Scholar, Middx, Hackney
Rosa Moody, Daur, 4, Scholar, Middx Hackney
Florence Moody, Daur, 1, Middx, Hackney

It's too much of a coincidence to disregard to find the pair together, and Oliver's obituary states he was born in London.
I have details for all the others except Fred and Oliver. Though why they left from Liverpool is a mystery. Jonah, Elizabeth and the two youngest girls were back in Wiltshire by 1881. Four of those died before 1891 and I can't find Florence. Wonder if she joined Fred or Oliver.

Are there any other immigration details I can obtain?
Oliver seems to have wandered around for 10 years. What Canadian census records are available?

Thanks again.

Linda

I've found a Fred Moody in Denver!
But the birth dates are not right - my Fred was born Nov 1853 - these two were born either Oct 1854 or Nov 1855 - the latter was an inmate!

How accurate are the dates of birth given in US census?

Fingers crossed re the descendant!

I've found out a huge amount more about him using some of the links on here.

In 1900, his birth date is out by one year - it should be Jan 1859, so one year out on year of immigration isn't too bad. BUT in 1910 he says he immigrated in 1896:
1910:
O William Moody, Chicago Ward 13, Cook, Illinois 50. Immigrated 1896. Widowed.
Florence E Moody, 28
Leroy William Moody, 20
Henery A Moody, 18
Minnie B Moody, 15

1920
Moody, Oliver W, Head, M, 60, W,  - immigrated 1878
Moody, Leroy, Son, 30,

1930 - Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Oliver W Moody, 71
Age at marriage - 26

I've also got his obituary:
Oliver William Moody, a student of the career of Abraham Lincoln, died yesterday, the anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Mr. Moody, a retired painting contractor, died in Illinois Masonic hospital of complications which developed following injury in a fall last October. He was 81 years old, and lived at 3310 Harrison street. Born in London, England, Mr. Moody came to the United States at 17 and settled in Chicago at 27. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. C. W. Jones of Highland Park and Mrs. Herbert Rosback of Elmhurst, and two sons, Le Roy and Harry Moody. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel at 318 North Central avenue

Think I may also have found his great grandson on facebook!
