Hi Stan, I have a copy of the will of Agnes Luffman of Sutton Montaigne Somerset dated 1587. Hence the query.

Are Sutton Montague(fairly modern) and Sutton Montaigne (16th century) alternative names for the village of Sutton Montis?

Dorset / Luffman family of Oborne

Is this  family who migrated to Oborne early in the 18th century the same family  as the Luffman family who lived in Maperton Somerset during most of the 17th century? Please cross reference with my posting on the Somerset board.

Somerset / LUFFMAN family of Maperton
« on: Monday 02 February 09 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
John Luffman d Maperton 1662, father of Grace b Maperton 1615 and of Henry d Maperton 1673, whose son Richard was b Maperton 1653. Where did the family come from, and did they as seems likely migrate to Oborne Dorset around the end of the 17th century? If so, why?All spellings are as above, though sometimes surname spelt Lufman.

This is as maybe Stan, but it is obvious to me that the transcriber(s) were just unfamiliar with copperplate handwriting.

Apparently given their geographical locations it is apparent to me that ALL the people shown as SUFFMAN on the 1911 census should in fact be LUFFMAN. I believe this to be due to a capital copperplate L being taken as a capital S by a transcriber who was unfamiliar with this script which was very common in the early 20th century. I have reported the errors, and await developments. The important general point for all researchers is the copperplate L.

The Common Room / Re: 18th century Christian names

Perhaps I'm getting too old or past it  replying to my own posts, but there was another name I forgot to include; also from Oborne, Christian name Donsabell or Dousabell, as written the third letter could be a 'U' or an 'N'. Girl's name, mid 18th century. Anyone seen that one before.

During my search of Oborne Dorset registers I have come across the name Eranomous Eyres. There are a variety of spellings. The only name I know that resembles this is Hieronymous. This is a male name meaning Jerusalem, whilst the Eranomous is a woman. Has anyone else encountered this name, and if so where, and in what period?

Lincolnshire / Re: Stanton of Rippingale and Heckington

Thanks all,
These do all seem to be my family, before 1765 my family at Heckington were Baxter, after 1822 Burton of Pinchbeck. Were these the same Burtons as those at Heckington in the 1600s?
