World War Two / Re: POW William Stephen Kennaird Walker
« on: Saturday 03 December 22 16:32 GMT (UK)  »
Just to add my experience with these records.

The ICRC do have some basic PoW records, but it may take a long tome to arrive  (ICRC reasonably prioritise their more current work), and the results are not very comprehensive.

As said, try the record set WO 416 at National Archives.   The index is online, so you can search before you pay.  If you can travel to Kew you may hold the original German card(s). The German WO 416 card MAY have photos, fingerprints and medical data, or it may not, but to see the actual card (which your PoW probably never did) is fantastic.  I did this for my Father's card.    If travel is not possible, they will scan the card(s) for a fee.

Armed Forces / Re: WW2 UK Military Records moving to Natiobs Archive
« on: Saturday 03 December 22 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
I had missed this announcement, which was in 2021.  It applied to some 10M records where the DoB is before 1940.  This means all WW1 and WW2 records, and presumably up to approximately 1956.  The announcement does not say how access may be given before a blanket 115 year cut-off.  It looks like they have "made up" the 115 year rule to cover the oldest of soldiers, rather than to comply with any privacy regulations.
NA say they will make further announcements in time - but the scale of this move, and the indexing effort must be huge. I cannot see that there will be any motivation to scan these in bulk, so any document inspection will be at Kew, or pay-on-demand to have an individual record scanned.  As we know, military records can be quite LARGE.

Technical Help / Re: Backup problem
« on: Wednesday 23 November 22 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
W7 Backup is a  bit poor at backing up large disks. What has probably happened is that it starts by building a list of files to be copied, then starts to copy them.  if a file is moved, or deleted while the backup is running it may fail to find it when it gets ready to copy it.  This causes these sort of errors.   It's not a big deal. If you have concerns you can run backup again.
(BTW As you will know, Windows 7 is OUT OF SUPPORT - it still runs, but you will not receive security updates).

As I understand it the backup process in W11 is totally different.

Scotland / Re: Eastwood Cemetery - Help!!!
« on: Saturday 12 November 22 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
The Commonwealth War Grave Commission has 118 burials in Eastwood, Glasgow.   Use these to locate your lairs.  The CWGC memorials are very distinctive and easy to spot at a distance, and the website give you lair details.  I have used this technique to zero in on lairs that are not well marked.

Scotland / Re: 1921 Census Scotland
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
No-one knows, except at ScotlandsPeople.  As you say, it was promised for later in 2022 - but who knows what the issue might be, or how long it might take.  They'll have to say SOMETHING soon.

The Common Room / Re: Why would an entire family change their surname?
« on: Sunday 16 October 22 11:12 BST (UK)  »
In the timeframe you discuss, there were very few written records. Illiterate people relied on others to write their few records. Once a name was misheard/miswritten, the change would perpetrated. As written records became more common, the change would be solidified by being repeated and copied. Then there are deliberate changes - for reasons of wanting to be disassociated from a name or family, because of bad history, or money, or family dispute.

These are just some reasons for unexpected name changes.  Don't know if any could apply to your family.  At this remove, it will be very hard to prove.

Technical Help / Re: Best platform for sharing photos?
« on: Wednesday 12 October 22 11:13 BST (UK)  »
Google Photos can do this.  I recommend it if you are already a Google user with a Gmail address. (if not, probably not worth it).
You create an Album, add your photos to it, and Google gives you a link (a short URL) that can be shared via email or messaging.  You can make access Universal, or only to a named list of email addresses.

Technical Help / Re: Windows 7 / Anti virus
« on: Friday 08 July 22 11:03 BST (UK)  »
There are several freeware anti-virus tools.  If the PC is freezing then that's probably an issue with the hardware, or Windows.  Give it a good clean out and blow through (fluff and dust buildup can cause overheating, which can cause lockups).  Remove any software that you do not use. Delete any unwanted files, delete all temporary and cache files.  If needed, re-install Windows from the original disks.
