Armed Forces / Re: WW1 Replica medals
« on: Monday 04 April 22 12:02 BST (UK)  »
For family history purposes I think a replica is better than nothing.   A little note inside the box to say it is a replica, and no-one is misled later down the line.   The official records will say that the original was awarded.    Another alternative is to look for authentic medals being sold on eBay or whatever - if they were of a type with no engraved name then that is a good solution in my view.

World War Two / Re: WWII Cipher Officer records
« on: Friday 25 March 22 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
I think it's worth asking for them. They are unlikely to say no, if they can locate them.
However, I don't suppose there will be very much information (if any) on his work at Bletchley Park.   The Army Service records will have some basic biographical information, a list of his postings, awards given, and his discharge details.  But any posting to BP will be very terse, if it is even listed.

Scotland / Re: 2022 Census
« on: Thursday 03 March 22 11:12 GMT (UK)  »
We were surprised just how SHORT the England & Wales 2021 online census process was.  You are only asked simple questions relevant to the individuals that you enter at the start.  It seems clear to me that a paper census document has to be much larger, to cater for large families and other circumstances. It's also much more error prone (because there is no checking between questions) and much more intrusive, as you have an enumerator calling at your house, and peering at your answers.

If you can enter a post on Rootschat, then entering the Census online is no harder, and takes hardly more time.

Scotland Resources / Re: Access to 1939 register
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
I do not believe you can view it anywhere.

You may order selected details from a specific entry by completing a form, supplying evidence that the individual is dead (date of death, or certificate if death outside of Scotland), and paying a fee (£15).

World War One / Re: Royal Flying Corp

They are also available (at no charge) from National Archives in Kew, if that is a possible journey for you.
If not, Kew will scan the documents you want, for a fee.

World War Two / Re: Prisoner of War Number?
« on: Thursday 20 January 22 10:38 GMT (UK)  »
I occasionally hear of UK PoWs who have been tattooed with a number. This is strange to me, as PoWs had their numbers on dog tags. Tattoo was generally used for Concentration Camp victims.

Is it possible that a tattoo was used because the PoW mentioned was an escapee?

Technical Help / Re: You PC ran into a problem and needs to restart
« on: Sunday 09 January 22 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
So many possible causes - but I have two suggestions.
1. Bad software - if you have installed anything in last couple of weeks, or even some OS fixes, then back them out.
2. Overheating (common in laptops) - check all vents, slots etc are clear of dust & fluff. Don't use laptop on a soft surface like carpet....
