Technical Help / Re: Cordless phone misbehaving!oticeoticed
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 18:26 GMT (UK)  »
Check that the base unit has power - check plug, fuse, cable.   Test the rechargable batteries, replace if suspect.
To scrap a two-year old phone is surely not right.

Other Countries / Death in Valparaiso, Chile
« on: Monday 01 November 21 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
Please, if anyone is familiar with Chilean records, can I ask for some help?

I have a relative, Walter Archibald NEILSON (b. Glasgow 14th Oct 1867) who is recorded on a Glasgow memorial as having died in Valparaiso, Chile on 12th June 1907.  I would like to locate the death and/or burial record please.   I am totally unfamiliar with Chilean records, or Spanish language, but I believe I have found his marriage in FamilySearch - to Elena Griffiths Lyons, on 31st Dec 1897 in  Talca, Chile.  There may be some children also of that marriage, who did not survive.

But I cannot find any record of his death.....   Thanks in advance.

Technical Help / Re: Help needed to connect to Hub
« on: Thursday 15 July 21 08:47 BST (UK)  »
At the back of the BT Hub there should be a little black plastic plate that slides out.
It's marked "Hub Settings" and says "Pull out for useful info".

Printed on this are various details including the unique name of the hub - BT call this the "Wireless Network" .   It will be something like BThub6-xxxx.   There is also the secure key - BT call this the "Wireless Password/key" - this will be a string of characters (upper & lower case) and numbers....

On your device turn on WiFi and enter the Wireless Network and Key.

If the plate is missing contact BT.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Mac, Mc. & Mc
« on: Tuesday 22 June 21 10:02 BST (UK)  »
I think you will find that Mac, Mc. & Mc are all interchangeable.   Many people would only hear the name spoken - and they would spell it as they thought it should be written.
The name may change though generations, or even within someone's lifetime - particularly if they moved from a Scottish culture to somewhere else - like Australia or USA etc.
There is no significance to the different spellings, or appearance.    When searching for Mac names, you need to keep this in mind.

I was disappointed to see a recent announcement on ScotlandsPeople website.  They say that they will not be publishing the 1921 Scottish Census until second half of 2022.   Does anyone have any insights into why there is this delay?  I assumed the documents were already scanned and indexed.  There was speculation that it might be made available in June 2021 as per the 100 year rule.

The Common Room / Re: Disposing / Archiving Genealogical Research
« on: Wednesday 21 April 21 09:39 BST (UK)  »
I don't think the SOG are accepting such material any more. When I visited, they had a huge archive of paper research and material, and no easy way to index it, let alone make use of it.  The SOG is undergoing a major restructuring and modernisation programme as they have realised how outdated their processes and systems had become.

The Stay Safe Board / Re: What should be the essential data on a Covid passport?
« on: Friday 02 April 21 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Yet again, we see the emerging need for a proper, simple, ID scheme in UK.    Tax records, Health records, driving licences, passports - they're all incomplete substitutes for a proper ID scheme.  If we had a UK-wide register, how much simpler would it be to follow up on inequalities, rights, discrimination, and people who get "lost" off the records, to their own detriment.  Other countries have no issue with this, because they understand the advantages.....
