Family History Beginners Board / Am i jumping to conclusions
« on: Saturday 31 January 09 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
As i am quite new to looking into my family tree , i thought i would ask your views on the following .Maybe somebody might have some ideas on this .
On the 1861 census in Falmouth on board HMS Cordelia (an Australlian warship) there is a Gusre Lobeck on board , although it is not clear , could it be Gustave Lobeck?, born in Memel Prussia ..Then it says NBS , does this mean Not British subject . Aged 22 he is an able seaman .. Then on
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ausnavy/L's.htm there is mention of a GUSTAVE Lobeck from Memel Prussia deserting ,on 11th Nov 1861,an able seaman 23 yrs old .This must be the same man.
On the 1871 census in Falmouth there is first mentioned my GG Grandfather Carl Lobeck aged 35 yrs Ships Chandler from Prussia ..Living with his wife 2 girls and a servant .
In 1871 he has his first son is born Carl GUSTAVE Lobeck but he dies the same year .
In 1872 he has another son Carl AUGUST Lobeck.
On 4th april 1872 Karl takes out British Naturalization and states he has been in England since 1863 .He says he is from Luhmannsdorf in Pommerania
He married on April 8th 1866 as Charles Lobeck ..
He signed his name on the naturalization papers Karl Ernst August Lobeck.
He changed his name from Karl to Carl to Charles during a few years in England ..
Firstly whats a Prussian doing on board an Australian warship . and a 22yr old able seaman could not possibly have been a Naturalized British subject ,It was a very expensive process. What are your views ..Could this be the same man or just wishfull thinking .

Thanks Roy

Family History Beginners Board / Help needed , How do i solve this .
« on: Friday 30 January 09 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
My GGrandfather William Henry Hutchinson B 10/4/1856 in Alston Cumberland had a secret first marriage .It was a family rumour for many yrs . We found out for sure when looking at the 1891 census for Newport Monmouthshire . At his brothers shop Thomas H Hutchinson a Piano dealer (head of the household ) is listed William and sister in law Mary Hutchinson aged 28yrs . (Born Circa 1863) Place of birth not readable .
In the 1901 Census , same shop , Mary Is now 38yrs old from Dublin and a WIDOW and no sign of William .
But we know that William married in 10/6/1894 to a Eda Lobeck ,in Cardiff in Church  , Under the name of Henry Hutchinson, both of full age and a bachelor and Eda a spinster  But he then married Eda again on 12th July 1897 , this time as William Henry hutchinson ,in a Registery office in St Pancras London ,again as a Bachelor and spinster although now ages are Eda 21yrs and William 28yrs ..Why 2 marriages , was the first one bigamous .or because she lied about her age ?
How do i find his first wifes name , we know that he must have married between  1879 (when his first wife Mary would have been 16yrs old ) and the 1891 census when he is listed as married . So i have looked at marriages between a William Hutchinson and a Mary in Cumberland between these dates and there are about 5 possibles , and i dont even know that he married in Cumberland .
Any thoughts before i send off for every marriage certificate possible , and any thoughts on why he married the same woman twice .

Many Thanks Roy
