As i am quite new to looking into my family tree , i thought i would ask your views on the following .Maybe somebody might have some ideas on this .
On the 1861 census in Falmouth on board HMS Cordelia (an Australlian warship) there is a Gusre Lobeck on board , although it is not clear , could it be Gustave Lobeck?, born in Memel Prussia ..Then it says NBS , does this mean Not British subject . Aged 22 he is an able seaman .. Then on
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ausnavy/L's.htm there is mention of a GUSTAVE Lobeck from Memel Prussia deserting ,on 11th Nov 1861,an able seaman 23 yrs old .This must be the same man.
On the 1871 census in Falmouth there is first mentioned my GG Grandfather Carl Lobeck aged 35 yrs Ships Chandler from Prussia ..Living with his wife 2 girls and a servant .
In 1871 he has his first son is born Carl GUSTAVE Lobeck but he dies the same year .
In 1872 he has another son Carl AUGUST Lobeck.
On 4th april 1872 Karl takes out British Naturalization and states he has been in England since 1863 .He says he is from Luhmannsdorf in Pommerania
He married on April 8th 1866 as Charles Lobeck ..
He signed his name on the naturalization papers Karl Ernst August Lobeck.
He changed his name from Karl to Carl to Charles during a few years in England ..
Firstly whats a Prussian doing on board an Australian warship . and a 22yr old able seaman could not possibly have been a Naturalized British subject ,It was a very expensive process. What are your views ..Could this be the same man or just wishfull thinking .
Thanks Roy
