World War One / 3 soldiers - WW1 - any info appreciated
« on: Friday 25 August 06 17:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I've put these chaps on the list for my next Kew visit which may be a while away, so in the meantime wondering if there is any information anyone could dig up in the meantime.  I know they all fought (though Frederick seems a little old for WW1?).

Philip Alfred Houghton born 1898
Horace Hilary Houghton born 1900

Frederick Alexander William Erickson born 1888

They were all born St George in the East, Stepney, East London.

I have a photo of Frederick and Philip but it provides no clues as only Philip is in uniform with no identifying features.

Appreciate any help.

« on: Thursday 08 June 06 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I don't have a lot of information but perhaps someone might shed some light.  I'm looking for Francis (George) Houghton.  I believe he left England c1913 aged about 17, b. London.  Unsure where he landed.  I'm fairly certain he travelled alone.  I know he died in Australia. Father: Francis George Houghton (a stevedore), Mother: Louisa

Sorry I got this snippet of information from a relative who I can no longer contact.

Essex / Kirton Road/Selsdon Road - Upton Park/West Ham
« on: Thursday 08 June 06 08:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Before taking a trip, I was wondering if anyone would know if Kirton Road and Selsdon Road, just off of Green Street near what is now Upton Park Football Ground has been left intact since the turn of the century or redeveloped?  I think in the early 1900s they were terraced 2 up-2 down row houses.

Thanks in advance

London & Middlesex Resources / Gas Light & Coke Company London 1915
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello

If you had relatives who worked for this company around this period, it might be worth looking at this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,161511.0.html

The company was I think one of the biggest in the country of its kind at the time, based in Beckton East London where there was a major gas and tar works, but with satellite locations all around London.  Employees were gas fitters, labourers, clerks, bargemen, boilermen, stokers etc.

Armed Forces / Gas Light & Coke Company London 1915
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I recently picked this old book up at a secondhand bookshop, and thought I'd post some info here in case it will be of help to someones research.  Called Co-Partners' Magazaine, Vol V 1915 it is an annual of the Gas Light & Coke Company.  This company was London based with works, offices and showrooms all over London, the main works being at Beckton East London.

This edition of the magazine, while providing info on the company, is basically a war record of its employees for the year.  At 350 pages it has tons of military photos (portraits, at the front, platoon groups, barracks, training, work etc), "Letters from the Front", Injury Reports, War reports of all kinds, a Roll of Honour with photos and profiles, photos of the Company's Men with the Colours etc etc.

I hope it might be useful to someone and although the index isn't the best I'd be search out information if you'd like.  I've included a few images to give you an idea of what it contains.
