Hi,

The 1881 census is available online through the LDS via:

http://www.familysearch.org/
and you should be able to find your relatives there

Do you know what part of the country your grandmother was born? I could find three different Edith Humphreys of about the right age on the 1881 census with fathers name George. But none of the mothers was called Beatrice.

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: 1861/1871 census Latchingdon,Maldon, Henry Pumfrey
« on: Saturday 04 December 04 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Geoff for looking up all those Pumfreys for me.
I suspect the Latchingdon and Steeple ones must all be related as it doesn't seem such a common surname.
I was also a fan of Bagpuss as a child...particularly because it had the little girl called Emily who opened up the shop :)

Thanks again,

Emily

Thank you Pauline for such a fast and thorough response.

I think the Henry Pumfrey I am looking at is the entry:
Henry Pumfrey 17  Maldon, Essex, England Mate  Vessels  Kent

so I guess it won't help me too much to have that page as he seems to be working on a boat and not living with relatives. It also could explain why I didn't yet manage to find him on the 1881 census as he could have been out on a boat somewhere. But thank you for your kind offer.

I ordered a copy of his birth certificate weeks a few weeks ago but which didn't arrive here yet so maybe then I might be able to see if his parents are also in the list that you sent me.

Thanks again for your help,

Emily

Essex Lookup Requests / 1861/1871 census Latchingdon,Maldon, Henry Pumfrey
« on: Wednesday 01 December 04 07:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping that someone might be able to find a Henry (or Harry) Pumfrey (also seen spelt Pumffery, Pumphrey and other variations) on the 1861 or 1871 Essex censuses.
His birth is registered in Maldon district, June 1852 so he would be around 9 in the 1861 census
On the 1901 census his birthplace is stated as Latching, Essex (which I am assuming must be Latchingdon (since his wife Eliza comes from Mundon which seems to be the next village)

I'd be especially interested in who he may be living with or even other people of the same surname in the same village (am assuming there can't be too many as the village looks very small on a map)

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me,

Emily

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Look up luton Bedford - 1891 + 1901
« on: Tuesday 30 November 04 02:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Laura,

For the marriage record on the free bmd website I found:
Marriages Dec 1885
Attwood    Thomas Joseph        Luton    3b   897
Cogans    John         Luton    3b   897
Osborn    Lizzie         Luton    3b   897
Waller    Kate Adelaide         Luton    3b   897

and from the search facility on the 1901 census website I could find:
John Cogans  41 Glasford Scotld West Ham West Ham Iron Moulder
Lizzie Cogans  38 Bedfordshire Luton West Ham West Ham
Arthur Cogans 5 Bedfordshire Luton West Ham West Ham
Edward Cogans  1 Lond Poplar West Ham West Ham
Harry Cogans  12 Birmingham Warw West Ham West Ham
Joseph Cogans 10 Birmingham Warw West Ham West Ham
Kate Cogans 6 Bedfordshire Luton West Ham West Ham
Mary Cogans  14 Bedfordshire Luton West Ham West Ham Jute Wearer

which would suggest to me that your Kate Waller married Thomas Attwood, but I didn't find any suitable matches for either of them on the 1901 census.
