United States of America / William Henry Bouskill Help Please - Completed
« on: Monday 30 November 09 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
Wonder if anyone can help me on this. He was born 1897 at Little Houghton Barnsley Yorkshire. I know he went to live in America and married there but it did not last and he came home.

I have got that he travelled on the Cunard ship Scythia and arrived in Liverpool on 8 May 1933, he had departed from New York, Boston and Cobh.

What I would love to know is when he went to America and who he married. Can anyone tell me how I can find this as unfortunately I cannot afford to upgrade Ancestry again.

I am taking it he went over in the 1920's. I have got an idea he may have had at least one child in America but he came home on his own.

I will be very gratefull for any help.

Census and Resource Discussion / Free 1911 ???????
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
I got this in an email from FFHS yesterday

Free access to 1911 Census has proved too popular!

The free access provided at the seven hubs around England and Wales was provided as a set number of credits for use on the 1911 Census website. The huge popularity of the scheme at both Tyne and Wear Archives and Museum, and Manchester Archives and Local Studies and Greater Manchester County Record Office, has meant that the credits supplied to these two areas have run out earlier than anticipated. Based on the onsite usage of the website at The National Archives (TNA) in Kew, it was estimated that the credits supplied would last for around a year. These sites ceased to have free access to the 1911 Census from 1 October 2009.

According to current usage information, the other five sites still have a good supply of credits. TNA advised each of the seven hubs that they would need to ration the credits and indeed Manchester did implement a restricted service but such was the demand and popularity unfortunately they consumed those credits sooner than anticipated. The experiment has been paid for entirely by TNA out of its own funds, and represents the equivalent of seven large-scale institutional subscriptions for a year. Credits were purchased for use on both the 1911 and findmypast websites.

The National Archives is striving to broaden awareness and access to its records right across the country and is pleased this scheme has been so popular at the Tyne and Wear, and Manchester archive services in particular. They have decided that as each regional archive exhausts its free 1911 Census credit quota it will provide it with three months’ free access to its Documents Online service. This invaluable resource for family historians includes over one million wills, five and a half million medal index cards and regimental diaries, among many other collections which are unavailable on other websites.

If you are unable to use this service in person at the reading rooms mentioned above, it is also available online at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline with downloads charged at up to £3.50 per document.

There is now a subscription option which will allow access to the 1911 Census for a fixed fee. Details of offers can be viewed here:

www.findmypast.com/1...

As far as future access on other websites is concerned, Ancestry was originally one of the bidders, but they chose to withdraw. However, they have recently stated: “Ancestry.co.uk is keen to offer members the richest and most diverse range of family history content available and has begun to discuss with The National Archives the possibility of securing a licence to offer our own online access to the 1911 Census in the near future.”

Looks as if Ancestry is going to get 1911 all I want to know is how much above our subscription is that going to cost...

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wombwell Hall & Beech House Farm - Completed
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Wondered if anyone had any information on these two places. I am trying to help a Lady with her family history and she is also trying to get information on these two places where her family lived.

Her Grandfathers cousin lived at Wombwell Hall Wombwell Barnsley, his name was Jasper Wood and we know he was there in 1914 but could have been there before that.

Her Grandfather, Arthur E Wood moved to Beech house farm Hemingfield Barnsley in 1914.

Would be grateful for any information.

I think this is a good idea, it could have helped me a lot if my Ancestors had done it. Hope other areas take up the idea as well.

Warwickshire / Warwickshire Past Unlocked
« on: Friday 31 July 09 09:34 BST (UK)  »
I telephoned Warwickshire Council yesterday as I am hoping to go to Warwickshire in the next couple of weeks to do some research on my Mother's side of the family and needed some advice. I spoke to a lady at the Past Unlocked and she could not have been more helpful. She told me what I needed to know about visiting and even if we telephoned them the day before we go, they will reserve us a disabled parking space.

She even advised me of where to find out where to find out where my Granny and Grandad are buried at the Old Cemetery Whitnash seeing as I cannot get any help from Whitnash Church.

It is really great when you can get this sort of help.

Devon / JEFFERY - Help Please - Updated
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 23:03 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the birth of my Grandmother Sarah Jeffery but not having much luck. Trouble is that from certificates and census I have 5 possible birth years for her, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890, 1891. So I thought I would try to find births of her siblings but no luck there either.   :(

I have Sarah born at either Ilfracombe or Knowle Devon. She married William Albert Ansted in Exeter on 4/2/1911 age 22.

She married my Grandfather William Charles Summerfield in East Stonehouse on 26/12/1916 age 25.

She died at 123E King Street Plymouth on 24/2/1966 age 78

I tried to find birth of Charlotte Jeffery c1903 Plymouth Devon (from 1911 census) she married Frank Lomax at Plymouth Jun Q 1922. The only birth I can find is Charlotte Jane Jeffery Mar Q 1904 Devonport.  ???

If I got in touch with Plymouth Registry Office and gave the information on her parents that I know, which is her Father was Thomas Jeffery and Mother was Sarah would I get charged. I know if I do it through GRO I would get charged £4 administration even if its the wrong certificate.

Or can anyone help find the birth.  ;D
