Yorkshire (West Riding) / Help Please Crossley
« on: Friday 23 July 10 18:57 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help someone with their tree and have come onto a problem and wondered if anyone could help me sort it.

I have a Samuel Dook who married Mary Cherry in 1870 at Wombwell Barnsley South Yorkshire. On 1871 census there is a child with them named Joe Cherry b.1868 Darfield Barnsley who is down on the census as "wifes son by former husband". I am in contact with someone who has the birth certificate of one of Samuel's and Mary's children and for the mother it has

Mary Dook late Cherry formely Crossley

My problem is that I cannot find a marriage between a Cherry and Crossley. I have even put in just general searches using the surnames with variations and still no luck.

Mary was born c1844 Wombwell Barnsley.

On 1871 census name spelt Duke.

Any help would be appreciated

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wombwell Hospital ...... Completed as Far as I Can
« on: Friday 09 July 10 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Wondered if any knows where Wombwell Hospital was. A friend has some commemorate plates dated 1938, the story goes that miners from Wombwell Barnsley made a pie, based on the Denby Dale Pie, and sold these plates and all proceeds went to Wombwell Hospital.

We know nothing about this hospital and cannot find any information on it.

Staffordshire / Just a Quick Question
« on: Thursday 06 May 10 21:42 BST (UK)  »
As some of you will know I asked for help on Summerfield family  ???

Can someone please advise me on how I should enter these in my tree. My tree at the moment is with the surname Summerfield but the ones I have just found are with the surname Somerfield, so what name do I put them under in my tree.

If I put them in as Somerfield then their children would be a different surname to them. ???

Staffordshire / Am I right !! Summerfield
« on: Sunday 02 May 10 21:26 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather was George Summerfield c1861 Staffordshire, I found him after he married on 1891 census (name transcribed as Summerford) and on 1901 census both these census were in Plymouth Devon where he had married and settled, but could not find him on census with his Father William or find his birth, though I had sent for a couple of likely certificates.

Last night I decided to have another go and I think I have him but am not sure as on 1871 census then tracing the rest of the family back, the surname is Somerfield. Not only that but I decided to have a look on Familysearch for his fathers? marriage (taken from the census I found) and think I have found it but for one thing it is in name Somerfield and for another it is a record I would normally ignore because it was submitted by a member.

On this marriage it also gives the baptims of the children and by going and looking for registrations I have found them but again the name is Somerfield.

Be interested in what people thought on this.

The Common Room / National Archives: Surplus Used Microfilms Offered
« on: Wednesday 24 February 10 09:48 GMT (UK)  »
The National Archives are disposing of Microfilms. Unfortunately even though I would love a lot of them for a local Family History Group I help to run there is no way I could get to pick them up and as we are in Yorkshire and most of our members are in the older age range there is no one to pick them up.

Here is the link for information and for PDF file

The Common Room / Parkes - Help Please
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to help someone and this one has got me completely lost.

The lady I am helping is trying to do her Mother's family but unfortunately does not have a lot of information.

She has her Grandparents Wedding Certificate,

1905 Hoyland Barnsley

George Thomas Parkes, age:36 Bach, Coal Miner-Ripper, No Fathers Name

Ruth Ratcliffe, age:30 Spinster, Father: William Ratcliffe

Both living at 57 Chapel Street Hoyland Barnsley

Witnesses: George & Esther Mellor

The lady I am helping did not know he was named George as he was always known as Tom. As far as she knows the family are from Barnsley and always thought Hoyland area but we cannot find him anywhere except on 1911 census.

George Thomas Parkes, Head, 42, Coal Miner-Ripper, Yorks Whykam (transcribed Wkyham)

Ruth Parkes, Wife, 36, Staffs Lane Head (married 5 years)

George Parkes, Son, 5, Yorks Hoyland Common

Arthur Parkes, Son, 4, Yorks Hoyland Common

Doris Parkes, Dau, 0, Yorks Hoyland Common (this is the lady's Mother)

Living at 17 Kay Street Hoyland Common.

I decided to do a search on 1901 census on FindMyPast for the address they were living at when they married and found Ruth's family there but Ruth was not there.

William Ratcliffe 51 Head, Coal Hewer, Wolverhampton Staffs
Ruth Ratcliffe 52 Wife, Lane Head Staffs
Richard S Ratcliffe 13 Son, Coal Mining Horse ?, Barnsley Yorks
Tom Ratcliffe 8 Son, Barnsley Yorks
Tom Wadding Som 32 Boarder, Coal Miner-Ripper, Yorkshire

I found Ruth as a Servent at Bradford Yorkshire bu there is no sign of George Thomas Parkes. I have followed the Racliffe family right through to 1871 census.

What I am begining to wonder is whether Tom Wadding som (think this should be Waddington) is actually George Thomas or have I gone completely mad. ???

The Lighter Side / Heirhunters
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
I was watching Heir hunters today and while they were working on the case they looked at a Death Certificate on line. It was a certificate issued in 2008 and was in London.

Does anyone know how they were able to do this?
