Galway / Re: Tynagh
« on: Friday 08 April 16 10:38 BST (UK)  »
My Hoban family were RC until my Ggf's death in 1872. His wife was Church of Ireland and my Gf was brought up CofI when they had to return to her family. However a CofI Rev recommended my Ggf for the RIC which may have caused confusion and indeed I did not know that they were RC until a few years ago.

Galway / Hoban Family
« on: Thursday 07 April 16 16:11 BST (UK)  »
My GGgf John was soldier who died as a Pensioner before 1866 but his records are lost!. My Ggf William was born in Castleblakeney 1837/8 and well documented as he joined the RIC. He then moved to Lancashire Police and died 1872 as the result of injuries in service (He is on the Roll of Honour). His widow (no pension) returned to her family in Achill  with four young sons - my Gf Samuel born 1871. In the house recently I found a receipt for the purchase of a watch (which I also have) from Watts & Co, Gloucester. Another item was included in 1893 but the watch cost £12 10s - rather a lot in those days. The receipt was sent to Mr J J Hoban Tynagh Loughrea. I also have a photograph taken in a studio in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire of a chap who looks like a Hoban and a wedding picture sent to Achill before 1910 - looks like the same man.
This must be family related to my Ggf William but I have hit a brick wall and would love to solve the mystery! One last clue - a Laurence Hoban rented a cottage from my Gf in Achill in 1944.
Any bright ideas out there...please!

Thanks for replying. I have double checked 1901 census and their are only two possible Catherines but neither in Tynagh!  For possible fathers I have only a Thomas in Tynagh. Do you have any other information on her birthdate, other family members etc? Fundamentally I am looking for siblings of my Ggf b 1837/8 and cousins of my Gf b 1872 so Catherine would be likely. I am going to do a more detailed general post for Galway since I have only one reply to this. Do the relatives still live in Flowerhill? Alas records of this era are poor. I am in the UK but spend time in the West of Ireland.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA from hair
« on: Monday 14 March 16 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks for your help. I think the crunch lies in the fact that it would have to be put into the database most used by my extended family - otherwise a waste of money! I will enquire. Thanks

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA from hair
« on: Monday 14 March 16 11:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have a small locket of hair which probably belonged to my Ggf born 1837/8 and who died as the result of injuries in the Police Service in 1872.
I have not checked the hair for a root but it does seem unlikely. Can a DNA test be done on this hair?- any type of test would be a help. If so is there anywhere in the UK? Thanks

Galway / Tynagh

I have a receipt from a Hoban in Tynagh 1893.  It is for a watch bought in Gloucester which is in my possession probably given to my grandfather who was brought up in Achill. These Hobans must be relatives. OK I have done all the usual searches so is there anyone else looking at this family?

Carlow / Re: Carlow Asylum

Yes, they have some records. I have details of my GG grandmother in 1860. From letters she wrote to family she was not mad but probably suffered severe depression.

Wicklow / Re: Langrell/Pierce family of Wicklow
« on: Friday 13 March 15 17:18 GMT (UK)  »
There are several direct descendants of John and Susan who would love to find a marriage certificate but so far nothing has been found! Family notes tell us Susan was from Clonegall in Co. Carlow so the marriage is likely to be in that area or Wexford rather than Wicklow. We believe we have traced her family and her birth in 1809 - Carlow. She died in 1860 - Carlow.
Did any of your Hopkins in Canada come from Carlow? Having asked that another relative in S Dublin Co. married a Hopkins from Carlow who must have been living more in that area.  No doubt the cert is in some dusty cupboard which researchers have not yet been able to tackle, but the competency of Vicars records in that era leaves a lot to be desired.

Wicklow / Re: Langrell/Pierce family of Wicklow

Edward Pierce (Hopkins) Langrell - 29th July 1846 - was my Great Grandmother's brother. I am in touch with his direct descendants in Canada. He was christened only Edward Pierce. However the family was effectively orphaned in 1853 and the children were looked after by two families. EPH and his sister Susanna went to a Hopkins relative and as a means of identifying the family to which these children belonged the name of the 'carer' was added in the usual Irish tradition. Thus EP became EPH. His youngest brother had the name Wilson added - he was only a year old and she was a nurse/housekeeper to a Rev Guinness who EPH had great respect for and probably helped him get his Certificate at the Royal Dublin Society. He named one of his sons after the Rev but being teetotal spelt it Ginnis! There were 8 children (1836-1852). Two girls remained in Ireland and three girls and three boys emigrated to Canada and Detroit initially. Their parents were John Langrell and Susanna Hopkins. I have not tracked the Pierce yet. I have more info if you wish to e mail me direct. I am in the UK but have a house in Ireland.
