Thanks for your replies. His name is John Thomas Hoban b 1869 Lancs but brought up in Achill, Mayo. Joined RIC 23 Jan 1888, left 14 Sept 1899. Collar 52874. I have (photo) his original discharge cert. Have sent off for his other details. I will put this back under 'Uniform' on the Irish bit where it started!
His photo is with my 89year old Aunt and there it will stay!-I will not be allowed to take it out the frame but will ask around for a scanner if that might help - it's 50m round trip to a town. Have zoomed in and it could be a Harp & Crown. Am visiting in early march and will take the magnifying glass!
Many generations have been in the RIC but I have no other photos. Meanwhile I have another query re army service - his grandfather John Hoban who was described as a deceased Chelsea Pensioner in 1866 (poss died 1861/2) on his son's marriage cert - son was 28. Where might John the first have served? Valerie
