Thanks but another source has confirmed this is an RIC uniform. From 1901 they had collar badges too - just like those on the hat.

Can anyone identify this uniform?  He was in the RIC 1888-1899 but then the US Army and we always thought the photo was from the US. Sorry there is little hope of a better picture and yes I have tried the Army site.  Many thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks for your replies. His name is John Thomas Hoban b 1869 Lancs but brought up in Achill, Mayo. Joined RIC 23 Jan 1888, left 14 Sept 1899. Collar 52874. I have (photo) his original discharge cert. Have sent off for his other details. I will put this back under 'Uniform' on the Irish bit where it started!
His photo is with my 89year old Aunt and there it will stay!-I will not be allowed to take it out the frame but will ask around for a scanner if that might help - it's 50m round trip to a town. Have zoomed in and it could be a Harp & Crown.  Am visiting in early march and will take the magnifying glass!
Many generations have been in the RIC but I have no other photos. Meanwhile I have another query re army service - his grandfather John Hoban who was described as a deceased Chelsea Pensioner in 1866 (poss died 1861/2) on his son's marriage cert - son was 28. Where might John the first have served? Valerie

Can anyone identify this uniform? Photo taken 1899-1905, RIC Policeman who went to Chicago. Killed 1905, how, or what state,  I have no idea but may have been a reporter by then, so short service.  Many thanks.

Can anyone identify this uniform? Taken 1899-1905.  He emigrated from Ireland to Chicago but moved on I believe. Thanks
