I am also descended from Joseph via his daughter Leah Aston bn 1882. Joseph is my gt gt grandfather too. That makes us 3rd cousins I think!

I have traced the Astons back to Broseley in Shropshire via Merthyr Tydfil and Pontnewynyd. I guess you have done the same? If not then I can help you out there!

I might have the odd photo of Leah at family weddings. Maybe one of Joseph, but I'll have to check.

Why would you get baptised again?

Actually the male shacklock bn 1858 also died 1858 (in case anyone is interested!).

Thanks for your message, we will go over that area again.

I think the Leveson thing was posted by my mother in law a long while ago when she thought it was him, but he was far too young in 1856, only 15 presumably that would have been scandalous! We then moved on to Augustus, his older brother, but he would only have been about 20 and Elizabeth Shacklock was forty!

All we have to go on is the 1861 census that says he was born in Oxford and that his name was Harcourt. Elizabeth had other sisters younger than her so maybe Elizabeth took him on as her own. I just can't imagine a young Aristocrat with a much older Shacklock woman in Oxford - there's no evidence to suggest any of them strayed from Mansfield.

As for Belper, it's a bit late, I think we looked that one up and ruled it out since he grew up and married someone else, but I will revisit.

Thanks very much

No I don't, but I would guess that the informant would have been his father who he was living with in 1871. I don't think he ever lived with his mother - perhaps she died in child birth or handed him over to the shacklock family in order to get married, who knows..

Thanks for your reply, we have seen that entry.

What I'm really looking for is his baptism since I don't know who his mother was. I think the name Trent was just given to him as a middle name since there are no Trents in that area.

Looking for any information about Harry Trent, or Harry Trent Shacklock who died aged 19 in Mansfield, in 1875. He was supposed to have been born in Matlock, but we cannot find him in the online records. He doesn't appear to have been registered.

His father may have been Henry Stephen Shacklock who was working in Derbyshire, possibly Dinnington in one of the Censuses, but we have no idea who Harry's mother was. We have assumed that she died soon after he was born since Harry turns up living with his Shacklock relatives in later Census returns, back in Mansfield.

Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Hi,

My only hope is that someone will have access to something that isn't online, for example baptism records for Oxfordshire - that they can search for me I think.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. We know about his marriage and his family and yes we do have his marriage certificate, but he put his Grandfather's name on the Shacklock side, which has been crossed out. Grandfather Shacklock was a long time dead before he was born. What we don't know is who his parents were.

Thanks

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Mystery of Christopher Harcourt Shacklock

Hello,

We are looking for a baptism record for one Christopher Harcourt Shacklock, born around 1856.

According to the 1861 Census for Mansfield, he was born in Oxford, but there is no birth certificate for him as a Harcourt or a Shacklock, or any other variation on his name.

Family rumours suggest he may have been related to the Harcourt family from the area, or even Augustus Vernon Harcourt from Oxford University, but we have nothing else to go on. By 1871, he had started using the Harcourt part of his name as a middle name and his birth place was entered as 'unknown'. He appears in the Census with Elizabeth Shacklock, who was a spinster and aged 44 at the time he would have been born so it is unlikely that she is his mother and we have no clues as to who his father was.

So, if there is anybody out there can help by checking the baptism records for Oxford or the Abingdon area for him, or has any other ideas as to why he wasn't registered, we would be forever grateful!
