Hi James thanks for this. Robert did survive the war. I have managed to find some records and wondered how good you were at explaining what they mean. From the record he seems to have been in the black watch then joined the royal field artillery. He seems to have been hospitalised in 1915 at Aldershot with Syphilis and then his father seems to have purchased his discharged. Is my interpretation anywhere near right. the record I have been looking at is British WW1 Pension Record 1940-1920 for Robert Lamb Herd which I accesses via Ansetry.co.uk. any help or advise anyone can offer will be gratefully recieved.
