World War One / searching for info on WW1 soldier.
« on: Sunday 06 April 14 11:45 BST (UK)  »
I have found a relative who was in the armed forces during WW1.

I discovered he was in the Royal Army Medical Corps - army number 88918.
I got a copy of his medal  card, however his medal card only has a few details, his name Frank George Bibbs, his rank Private, his army number 88918, and his medal roll J/1/104 B22 page 8203. WO 372/2/133207 – 1914-1920.
There are no details on theatre served in or enlistment or discharge dates.

I cannot find his service record and know that he did not die during the war.

Can anyone offer advise on how I can find out any more details of his service.

I am trying to identify who this might be. Can someone give me an idea of the date and maybe the regiment this guy was in.

Does anyone think that this picture could relate to any of these characters....I'm at a bit of a loss.

These three are the sons of John harper who was a groom to the army originally based at Fethard in Ireland and then they moved to England..initially Aldershot where Edward was born.

Edward Harper 73788 MGC born 1889 Aldershot, Hampshire

George Edmund Harper 211385 MGC born born 1890 Romsey, Hampshire

Charles Harper 49449 Pte Coy 9th Plat 4th K. Liverpool born 1896 Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

I know the badge is for the Army Veterinary Corps but having difficulty relating it to anything else I have at the minute.

Thanks for any help

World War One / Identify Cap Badge
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have managed to do a better scan of cap badge -....can anyone identify please

His puttees are wrapped bottom up so suggesting his was not cavalry. The cap badge could be Royal Engineers, ASC or one of several corps that used horses. If you have the original you may be able to read the first character of the shoulder title.

Worth contacting the 5 DG museum to see if they were ever issued with such a cap. He also looks too small to be in the Dragoon Guards.

Further info on R.L Herd. He seems to  have joined the Black watch on 22.6.14. There is an attestation for that date. he was then discharged by Purchase on 27th June 14. there is also an application for special enlistment into the RFA as a gunner where he was accepted on 26.6 14. Any explanation would be useful.

No he was born in 1889 so was almost 25 when he joined the Black Watch. so why he was bought out after 6 days is a mystery.

Andy thanks for you info. I have now look at the docs for R.L.Herd. I am somewhat bemused as to what happened. I see that he joined the Black watch but have the record of his attestation. I then have a copy of his discharge by Purchase 6 days later. I have an inside sheet with some notes which i am having difficulty deciphering but it would seem have of the purchase money was repaid to his father...why would this be. Robert then appears to have joined the RFA. I have a record of his hospitalisation which as Andy says was before he went to France. I have attached a snippet of his discharge.

Hello all, I feel I may have confused the issue here somewhat. I started with the picture which I believed to be G.L.Herd. Then I was thrown into believing it might be his bother Robert. L. Herd. I have now located a pic of Robert and it is definitely not the man in my original pic so I am convinced that the pic is George who was killed in action in France, I have a picture of his grave which confirms he was in the Black watch as I originally thought. Robert seems to have started in Black watch but transferred as I said.. I have looked at a copy of his pension record which seems to indicate he left the army in 1915 after being hospitalised with syphilis and being bought out by his father...that is if my interpretation of the record is correct.
