Australia / Thomas, Robert & Robert BELL - Goldsborough, Victoria - 1880-1885
« on: Monday 12 December 22 05:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking please any information regarding my great great grandfather Thomas BELL (1827-1892), wife Mary & brother Robert (1832-1897). Thomas & Robert were gold miners who had worked in the Ballarat district during the early gold rush period and later sought other strikes in Victoria. I seeking any specific information about what mines they may have worked at and particularly what address/s they may have lived at during the period 1880 to 1885. I am also wondering where they may have gone to church at this time too? The family was nominally Methodist. Am also keen to find any information on Thomas's son Robert (1855-1932) who was also at Goldsborough together with his wife Isabella (1857-1906) during the same period. Robert was also a miner. I have no real idea where they lived specifically (ie. address/s) but know they had a son John born in 1878, another Robert Armstrong Bell born in 1882. John would have been old enough for schooling by 1883 or 1884 so may have a record with one of the local schools. Perhaps the family is mentioned in one of the local newspapers in this area? I am not aware of these newspapers..Any help much appreciated. Thanks cheers, Rob

Seeking please any information regarding the future life of my ggg-uncle William Spark BELL baptised at Allendale, Northumberland on 21st November, 1840. His parents were Thomas BELL, lead miner & Eleanor (baptised Nelly, nee SPARK). Eleanor died giving birth to William (cause of death shown as 'child bed') and the latter survived the birth. He appears on the 1851 census but seemingly disappears after that. I know his brothers Thomas, Robert & Hugh left for gold mining at Ballarat, Victoria,  Australia. Thomas in 1856 and Hugh & Robert in 1863 respectively. In those years the family was living at Risegreen, Allenheads. I have attempted to trace William in Australia but to no avail. Can anyone please shed some light on this mystery? Thanks. Cheers, Rob

Sussex / James GWIN/GWINN - Born c. 1680-5 - Sussex?
« on: Saturday 22 October 22 06:07 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to locate the birth details of my ancestor James GWIN/GWINN. He married Elizabeth MONKE in Lewes, Sussex, England on 8th October, 1706. Elizabeth was christened on 4th September, 1681 at Wadhurst, Sussex. Her parents were William Monke & Marie GILBERT. To date I have searched without success for James's birth/baptismal details. Perhaps he was born in another county of England? Can someone please assist me here please? Thanking you. Cheers, Rob

I am trying to solve the mystery of Charles SLINGSBYs daughter Mary (Maria) SLINGSBY and connection to my BELL family. According to several sources she was born in 1595 at Rothbury, Northumberland. Her father Charles married an Eizabeth ELLIS on 10/1/1586. Charles and Elizabeth later moved from Knaresborough (Scriven), North Yorkshire to Rothbury, Northumberland where Charles became the Rector of Rothbury. Several genealogies state that Mary later married a John BELL (1591-1680). John originated from Bellasis, Northumberland. Unfortunately I cannot locate either the baptismal record for Mary nor the marriage entry for her and John! Can someone please sort out what is happening here? Thanks heaps..cheers, Rob

Can someone please explain whether the following was actually born at Knaresdale, Northumberland?

John BELL
Baptised/Christened 22 December, 1667
Newcastle Upon Tyne.

On Wikitree it shows the place of birth as Knaresdale. John BELL later married a Mary ROBSON. His parents were Thomas BELL (born about 1634)& Barbara SURTEES. I descend from John BELLS son Thomas born at Knaresdale about 1690 & died in 1755.

Any clarification on this is much appreciated.
Thanking you in anticipation..

Cheers, Rob

My g-g-grandmother Julia (known as Juliet) CARON gave birth to daughter Elizabeth Harriett Juliet on 3rd March, 1850. Her partner was a John William POCKNELL, who was actually married to wife Eliza (nee HUMPHREY). I note the address at the birth was given as 279 Holborn, South St. Giles. I am also aware that this was a jewellers area of London. John POCKNELL was a jeweller and silversmith around this time.

Can anyone please confirm whether John William POCKNELL is shown as operating his business at this address? This is much appreciated. Perhaps directories would indicate who was at this address around that time, particlarly in 1850. I had originally requested a search for a John William PATTERSON however that was the name Juliet gave to her son later in life so as maintain the secrecy of the liaison. I do not really know whether her son or daughter knew of their real father. Juliet used the birth father's surname as a Christian name on the birth entry for her son John William Pocknell Caron in 1852. However on both certificates she uses CARON as the surname. I guess this was to hide the real father's surname and thereby protecting his absolute identity.

Thanks in anticipation..
Cheers,
Rob
