Norfolk / Benns from Yarmouth
« on: Tuesday 04 January 05 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
One of my gggrandfathers was Benjamin Benns, barge builder.
On 1871 Wandsworth census he gives his birthplace as Yarmouth. He died in Battersea workhouse later in 1871 aged 87.
I have traced 3 of his sons in the London area who were also barge builders.
I have no other info on him apart from his sons all declared on various census that they were born in London & Battersea area circa 1817- 1820. I understand that the Benns name is East Anglian in origin.

Norfolk / Re: How far back have you traced your ancestors in Norfolk?
« on: Tuesday 04 January 05 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently come across a gggrandfather named Benjamin Benns who died in Battersea workhouse in July 1871 aged 87 which puts his birth c1784. On the 1871 census  for the Battersea area he gives his birthplace as Yarmouth and his occupation as bargebuilder. He spawned a few of bargebuilders in the London area.
I understand from various sources that the name Benns is of East Anglian origin. Need to know more about him.
Any other Norfolk Benns out there??

Staffordshire / Re: JONES - STAFFS & LUDLOW
« on: Sunday 02 January 05 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Ticker,
Sorry, I think I have put this on the wrong board, but there seem to be many Jones's in Ludlow from looking at the Census's & most probably not related to mine.
I am only tracing the family as mentioned. Its was my paternal grandmother's family. My greatgrandfather Thomas Jones was born, possibly in Eccleshall, Staffs and his father, Robert was born, possiby in St Marys, Stafford. I have recently found Robert on 1871 census in Leominster, Herefordshire. Thomas was in Ludlow as far back as 1860 & possibly before. Both were photographers. The family stayed in Ludlow for many years. Thomas's eldest son, Walter, another photographer, was still there in 1901. Thomas retired to Saltford, Somerset by 1901 census. If you think you can point me in the right direction, I would be greatful. I know very little about the family apart from this.
Thanks for your reply, &  happy new year
