Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help to determine Regiment
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both,

No, it is not the Boer War but WWI.
Undoubtedly a Manchester link, as Samuel Oliver lived in Newton Heath. I think that there is an "oak" tree in the centre? Given Samuel's age at the time, could he have belonged to some sort of territorial unit?

Can someone possibly perform a miracle with this photo? Many thanks.

I have just been given this photo of my great-great grandfather. Can someone possibly tell me what WW1 Regiment he was in? I am unable to clearly see the insignia on his cap. Many thanks

Hello Catherine,

Thanks so much for your message. The last year has been full of surprises : a "cousin" has come to light (we are both descendants of Susan, Mary Boshell's daughter) and recently your aunt Catherine has been in contact with us. More info by personal message box.

Happy New Year!

Casa,

Off I go in a new direction! After England, Ireland & Australia, why not Canada?
Keeps me on my toes  ;D

All my thanks once again,

Casa,

I think you may have "cracked" the mystery! Your JW Rigden  could be the one I found in the list of returning Canadians who sailed on the "Grampian" ...
What are CEF papers?
Not too sure where I should go from here, but will now try to pick up the threads again & pursue the search.

Must admit that I have spent the last couple of months "running around" Sussex - Chiddingly, Alfriston & Hailsham - the paternal grandmother's side of the family & had come up with so much information that I had "dropped" Caroline!

Thank you so much and please don't hesitate if you come up with something more.

Ann

Irene,

Thank so much ... would you believe it   ::)  I've also identified the little girl at the left on the top, the one with the "x" ... it's my mother's niece !!! oh, yes, it's true ... mother was born in 1912 & Ida in 1913 ... they apparently corresponded for years after mother migrated to Oz but no letters now exist.

Family recently filled in bits & pieces of the puzzle ... I'm progressing

Thanks again  :)
Ann
