Fermanagh / Corclune - Ovens - c1811
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 19:16 BST (UK)  »
John Ovens (a direct ancestor) was born in Ireland c1809.  I can track him after 1849, in New Jersey and Toronto, Canada.  He supposedly was married in 1842 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

John is on the 1881 Ontario Census:
John Ovens, born 1811, Ireland, Merchant
Wife (Jane Wakefield Ovens) and children included with him on census; they were Methodist.
Living with the family is Jennie Stinson, age 20, born Ontario, Methodist.  I don't know who Jennie was.

Family lore states the Ovens family was from Co Fermanagh or Co Donegal.

On LDS site: Someone posted John Ovens, christening 23-June-1811, Inishmacsaint, Donegal, Ireland.  Parents: William Ovens, Elizabeth Stinson.  I don't know who posted this information.

1811 June 23 John, parents Wm. Ovens, Elizth (most likely Stinson; they had two other children, according to this site), Corclune.

I have John's death certificate.  Place of birth was "Ireland."  Parents' names were not included on certificate.

Is there a way to confirm the 1811 christening is for my John?  Seems coincidental that a Stinson was living with the Ovens in 1881.  I cannot find Jennie Stinson after 1881 (or before).  Thank you.

(I've posted a thread on the Canada board, inquiring about Jennie.  Some great results are posted, yet to be confirmed.)

The Common Room / Where would I find sketches-completed
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 18:55 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors were Irish and English.  I am interested in acquiring sketches, postcards, small paintings, mementos, etc. of a few towns in Essex, Sussex and Surrey.  My ancestors left those counties (and sailed to Canada) in 1857 so I would like something that shows the towns prior to 1880, if possible.

My son suggested Amazon UK.  But, is there a genealogy site where I might be able to find the above, please?  I know about the francisfrith site and will probably get a few things from that site.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I apologize if this is not the correct place to post this.

Isle of Man / L. Lee death information?
« on: Monday 13 April 09 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Louisa Lee was living in Castletown, Isle of Man in 1861 with her two children, Louisa and Hariett.

She was living with her daughter Hariett and son-in-law Gilbert Torrance in 1871.

I cannot find her after that date.  I do not see her on FreeBMD, but perhaps Isle of Man is not included?

Any suggestions please where I might look for her death?  Louisa was born c1802 in Manchester, her surname was De Jongh. Thank you.

The Common Room / Isle of the Seas / 1066?
« on: Sunday 29 March 09 21:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure of the date of this statement; it was written by a distant rellie.  I believe it was written decades ago.
"...Grandfather Furnival married a Charlotte Lee.  They [Lee's] were silk manufacturers, Israeli French, the last "tribe" to come over to England in 1066. (The Isles of the Sea")
They are recorded in the Doomesday Book..."

I know a bit about the Battle of Hastings, and more about the Domesday Book.  I had never heard of "tribe" and don't know how the Isles of the Sea ties in to it all.  I apologize for my lack of knowledge.  I'm hoping someone may be able to tell me if the statement could be correct, or, if the statement just doesn't make sense.

(I did post a rather lengthy question on the Lancashire board that included the above quoted statement.  But the original post had more to do with my ancestors, rather than about the statement.)

Lancashire / Lee's (Legh's?) of Warrington
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am new to this site; I belong to another genealogical website and part of this message is from my post on that site.  I am hoping that I might receive other suggestions or help.  This is about my ancestor, Charlotte Lee and her parents.  I am wondering if they were distantly related to the Legh's of Lyme Hall.

Thomas Lee married Louisa De Jongh 30-Mar-1826, Warrington

Charlotte Lee, christened 26-Apr 1827, Warrington, Lancashire.  Thomas was a merchant of Sankey Street.  Charlotte married George Furnival.  I have their marriage and records of their life after 1849.  They settled in Ontario, Canada c1871.

1841 Warrington, Butter Market Street?
Louisa Lee, 38, School m., born Lancashire
Charlotte Lee, 14, born Lancashire
Harriet Lee, 2, born Lancashire
Two people living with the family.  Under their names
Louisa Lee, 4, born Lancashire

1851, Latchford, Cheshire
Louisa Lee, Visitor, married, 48, annuitant, born Manchester
Louisa Lee, Visitor, 14, annuitant, born Latchford
Harriet Lee, Visitor, 12, annuitant, born Latchford
They were visiting the Pendlebury family.  The head, Joseph Pendlebury was a Yeoman.

Louisa, Louisa and Harriett are in Castletown, Isle of Man in 1861. Louisa Lee was a Landed Proprietor.

Louisa and Harriet are on the 1871 census in Isle of Man.  Harriet married Gilbert Torrance, Merchant ship owner.

There is no mention of Thomas Lee.  I cannot find him.

For clarity, I will post this and finish my "story" in a few minutes.

During the early 1800’s, my ancestor’s tannery in Warrington, Lancashire caught fire.  A few years ago I was able to find information about the fire on the internet.  I now don’t remember the details, so I tried searching the internet again and cannot find out anything about the fire.

Would anyone have suggestions of where I might find information, please?  I am trying to find the date of the fire, which I believe is around 1824.  I would also like to include the full details with my Furnival papers.  My ancestor was either George Furnival or John Furnival.  One or both of them were mentioned in the "article."  I believe the article was at least one full page of text.  Thank you in advance.
