The Common Room / Advice on splitting a family tree
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 01:00 GMT (UK)  »
My half sister is having a DNA test and will be wanting to start her own family tee at some point.

My question is what would be the best way for me to edit my tree and produce a copy that just includes the parts that are relevant to her.

I have copies of my tree on Ancestry and WikiTree and of course I can produce a GEDCOM.

Advice/suggestions/software recommendations  would all be appreciated.

Other Countries / Jamaican Mystery
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 03:37 GMT (UK)  »
I recently took an Ancestry DNA test and one of my matches, apparently through the WRIGHT line, was with a cousin in Jamaica. She knows precious little about her ancestry and asked me if I might be able to offer any help. What I discovered made me realise that I am totally out of my comfort zone so I thought I'd see if anyone here were able to help or give any advice.
I did come across the http://www.jamaicanfamilysearch.com/index.htm site which appears to be very comprehensive but my lack of knowledge of Jamaican history and geography means that I was very soon lost.
If I lay out the few facts that I have then perhaps someone will be able to suggest a line of research.
My cousin is a great granddaughter of John WRIGHT who lived in Albert Town, which is in the hills (elevation 2,150ft)  of the southern part of the parish of Trelawny in Jamaica.
The only actual evidence of his name is on the 1907 marriage registration of his son, Daniel Robert Wright who was born in Albert Town in 1867., when John Wright was stated to be Daniel’s father, which was a requirement.
There is also a reference to him in a book by Ashton WRIGHT published in 1994 which states that-

“His (Daniel’s)  father, an Englishman, came to Jamaica to participate in the construction of the Freeman’s Hall Sugar Estate in Upper (Southern) Trelawny. Those who knew my grandfather described him as a bit of a ‘roughneck’, who married the most attractive and cultured black young lady in the community”.

Daniel also had 3 brothers, William Joshua Wright, born in 1869, Joseph Wright and John Wright.

And that's all that is known.

There is John WRIGHT in my direct line who might fill the bill, there is one born in 1816 (which would have made him 51 when Daniel was born) who died in Michigan, USA in 1882 but that's the only 'oddity'.

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

World War One / Identifying WW1 soldiers
« on: Friday 03 November 17 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have an official photo of a Grenadier Guards training squad taken in 1917. Does anyone know if it might be possible to get the soldiers identified? If so where would I try?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Dna Testing questions
« on: Saturday 30 September 17 06:59 BST (UK)  »
1. Trying to trace a 'father unknown'. Would a YDna test taken by the unknown's male grand child be of any use?

2. I would like to trace my paternal grandmother's father. I'm male, is there any DNA test that might lead me to him?

3. Is it still agreed by most that the Ancestry autosomal test is the best place (because of the size of the database) to start with DNA testing?

I'd greatly appreciate any comments/help/advice

United States of America / Where could I start?
« on: Friday 23 October 15 05:52 BST (UK)  »
My wife has no photos of herself prior to the age of 19 and I would dearly like to find her an earlier copy.

In 1948 she was at a wedding and would, possibly, appear in the wedding photo - aged 10.

The wedding was a cousin's she and her family subsequently left the UK for the USA where they took up residence.

When they left the UK they had 2 daughters the youngest of whom was born in 1954 therefor the earliest date that they could have left was 1954.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to which direction my inquiries should take.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Mystery grandfather.
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 06:47 BST (UK)  »
A friend has asked me whether the Ancestry DNA test which is now available in Australia might help to answer a family mystery.  On her father's birth certificate the father is "unknown" which has, effectively, put an end to any further investigation of that line. However.....

There is a family rumour that the "unknown" male was Spanish, or Mexican or..... Certainly Mediterranean colouration is obvious in some of her father's descendants.

So the question is would a DNA test show enough to either confirm or deny this rumour?

The person who might be portrayed in this photo was born in Hampshire in 1890.

Guesses much appreciated.
