The Common Room / Duplicate Birth Registrations
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 05:47 BST (UK)  »
I was just browsing through some hints from a well known genealogy site and I discovered that my birth - in England - was registered twice, once in the Apr/June qtr and then in the Jul/Sep qtr: of course both registrations have different reference numbers.

What does this mean? I have copies of my birth certificate but from which entry and would the other be different in any way?

Are both registrations, somehow, combined by the GRO?

England / Another brick in the wall
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 04:14 GMT (UK)  »
I've been trying, on and off, for years to trace this person without any luck at all. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions - other than to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate?

My Grandmother, Caroline Elizabeth HALL, was born 28 Jan 1892 in Froxfield, Hampshire. She married a James FOWLER (FOWLES) but was subsequently divorced.

Registered in September 1923 in Frome, Somerset is her second marriage to Arthur George MOBEY. This is the guy I've been unable to trace and I've looked everywhere I can think of without remembering, exactly, where.

In 1924 Robert Arthur MOBEY was born - registered in Shepton Mallet, Somerset - and that's all I know until her 3rd marriage, in 1951, to George WATKINS who I believe she met in Woodstock.

As I said, any help would be much appreciated.

Angus (Forfarshire) / 8 St Clements Lane, Dundee - Lodging House? **completed**
« on: Friday 31 August 12 05:57 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to ascertain what sort of a place this was, I have an ancestor who was an inmate - along with 25 other men and maybe as many women - at the time of the 1911 census.

William N Falconer was the Proprietor and his occupation was Lodging House Keeper.

Can anyone add anything to this?

US Completed Requests / Ellis Island query **Completed**
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 07:39 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor - David Lawson Grant - arrived at Ellis Island on April 7 1912. My question is does the fact that he arrived there imply that he was attempting to emigrate or did all visitors to the US go through EI at that time?

World War One / Medal Records - what do they tell me? ***COMPLETED***
« on: Friday 27 July 12 06:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the service details of an ancestor. All I've been able to find so far are Medal details which don't really tell me very much although someone in this forum might be able to glean something from them. Curiously one of the medal cards has his service number as 3447 and the other as L/3447 and I'm not sure why this should be. One other thing is his rank which, from the details below, was Lance Corporal but only joined the regiment in 1914: perhaps he might have seen service in South Africa prior to 1914?

Anyway, if anyone thinks they might be able to assist with deciphering the medal cards I'd be happy to forward them via pm.

Name Mead, N J
Regimental no: 3447
Lance Corporal
Squadron : not recorded
Dates 16.8.1914 - 17.8.1914
Embarked 16.8.1914, joined regt 17.8.1914.
Regiment 12th Lancers

From the Nominal roll of 12th Lancers 1914-1919

My father changed his names - unofficially - so there is a point in my family tree where my surname changes from MEAD to MEADE.

My father was born MEAD but from the age of 17 was known as MEADE.

Can someone suggest how best to handle this in FTM? I've tackled it in a number of ways, currently by ignoring the change but I'd really like the data to reflect the true story without having to include 'also known as' in every entry subsequent to my father's.

I was wondering if anyone has come across a program, for Windows, that can be used like a physical scrapbook. I have in mind a digital book onto the pages of which I can stick photos, emails and other documents and perhaps even allow me to insert notes or captions.

There is scrapbook software out there but most of it seems to be for creating elaborate photo albums where I want something a little different.

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate suggestions.

The Common Room / Tracing Living English Relatives *Completed*
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 23:23 BST (UK)  »
I had to do this recently and took out a subscription to 192.com. I found the person that I was looking for but now have 5 credits left that I'm not going to use - and they expire on June 1.

If anybody would like me to use those credits for a look-up then I'd suggest that you check out the site to see if you can find the person you are looking for then drop me a PM and I'll complete the look-up for you.

United States of America / I'm new to US research...
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 08:52 BST (UK)  »
...and am not sure how to go about it.

I'm trying to trace a family who emigrated from England, Lancashire about 1954. Husband and wife and 2 daughters.

I realise that some of this group could still be living so the details I can post are limited.

However, I know the names of the 4 and the birth dates and places of the mother and daughters.

Any tips that you can give would be greatly appreciated.
