Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA connection
« on: Thursday 18 July 19 07:12 BST (UK)  »
My wife had an Ancestry DNA test which resulted in finding an unknown half sister.

The match with 'A' was 1936 cM across 61.
There is also a match of 788 across 30 with 'A's daughter.
We've proven to our satisfaction that the connection comes from a 'dalliance' during the war.

We've now had another match of 234 across 8 and this person shares the same number with 'A'. There is a possibility that a similar event might have taken place - time and place work - but 234 seems a low number compared to the other connections.

What might this indicate?

The Common Room / Adoption question
« on: Thursday 27 December 18 01:16 GMT (UK)  »
I haven't had a look at this for some time now and wondered whether anything might have changed since I last explored tracing the person.

I recently obtained a copy of the birth certificate of an uncle of mine in Winchester in March 1918. The bc looks perfectly normal and has no annotations on it - that I'm aware of - to indicate an adoption.

I know that he was given up for adoption, I'm assuming not long after his birth and I believe from the last time I looked at this that until 1920 (?) adoptions were private affairs (!) and no official records were kept.

Am I correct in thinking that - apart from getting a DNA match - there's no way of discovering this person?

Thanks,
Simon

Buckinghamshire / MEAD knot/wall/roadblock
« on: Thursday 27 December 18 01:03 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone here has information about this and/or can help in any way?
I have a John MEAD b. 1631 in Monks Risborough d. 1690 in Wendover
and an
Alice CLARKE b. 1632 in Monks Risborough d. ?
they married in
1657 in Little Kimble.
Edward MEAD was born in Wendover in 1661.

Enter Susanna STAPLE b. 1641-1645 in Wendover d. 1703 in Wendover
John MEAD then married Susanna STAPLE on 13 Sep 1670 in Wendover - and they had lots of children.

On the face of it it would appear pretty straightforward, Alice dies and John remarries but I can find no record of Alice's death nor that John was a widower when remarried.

Any help/suggestions would, as always, be greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / RAF Service Records
« on: Tuesday 06 November 18 03:42 GMT (UK)  »
Not really a NEW topic, many people have been down this road before me.

My wife wishes to apply for her father's service records but doesn't have his service number. I believe it's possible to obtain the number from GOV UK but I'm not having any success at all. I wonder if anyone is able to tell me how I might be able to find the number?

We're looking for James MUDD, b 2 November 1908, he was in the RAF from before WW2 until sometime after and rose to the rank of warrant officer.

There are few times when being in Australia is inconvenient but undertaking family research from afar can sometimes be a real pain.

Durham / Banns query
« on: Sunday 04 November 18 06:39 GMT (UK)  »
In 1940 or 41 banns were read in Durham (Jarrow?) for a proposed wedding. Perhaps unknown to the groom, a recent convert to Catholicism, the banns were also read in his home parish. At that point the priest in his home parish approached his wife to confirm that he was indeed married: he was.

My question is, do you think might there still be a record/copy of those banns held anywhere and, if so, where would I best look?

United States of America / First time attempting US research
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 06:37 BST (UK)  »
My brother in law in Virginia would like to research his family tree and I've said that I'd be happy to assist. However I'm unsure where to start, presumably with his birth certificate? I do have Ancestry access so can do searches for various documents but what I'd really like is a road map of the steps to take and was wondering if anyone out there could point me in the right direction?

Buckinghamshire / Can't find children
« on: Friday 29 June 18 09:08 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help - or offer suggestions.
There is a family reunion taking place shortly in Long Marston and am trying to find possible great grand children of Herbert Samuel Mead.
Herbert had two daughters one of whom, Gwendoline, married Norman Dymock in 1947. Gwendoline died in 2005.
Gwendoline had a daughter, Janet, born in 1950 thought to have died in 2011.
Janet married Gerald K Jones in Aylesbury in 1976.
I understand that no details of living people can be published but perhaps a PM if anyone can find any trace of these children.
I'd be extremely grateful as I've exhausted all avenues that I can think of.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Trouble uploading
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 06:24 GMT (UK)  »
I had no trouble uploading a document a few hours ago but am now failing to upload an 89KB jpg file which definitely has a unique name.
What else could I be doing wrong? (I didn't realise that the document doesn't show in the preview!)

So: any guesses as to the Christian name of ????? Bates?

Long Marston is the residence, William Mead is the other gentleman.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Sharpening print and handwriting
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 01:36 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest the best way to sharpen the print and handwriting in this document?
I would also appreciate it if someone could tell me exactly what the document is. A loan? But I don't understand the marriage connection there.
