The Common Room / a real puzzler
« on: Sunday 07 October 12 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

anyone out there able to answer this question posed me by an American friend

"Any idea where I might find original wills, diaries, or things of that nature that talk about people's wishes with regard to death in England?  For example, my mom has a copy of Charles IX diary written in old French that talks about the St. Bartholomew's Day massacure, but of course that's about France (and it's in old French...).  I don't even know where I'd look online in terms of agencies etc."

Many thanks

United States of America / Missing couple - Thomas and Caroline Richards
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have lost a couple of people and just wondered if they might have gone to America.
They are Thomas James Richards b 30 Nov 1846 Cripplegate, London England and his wife Caroline Richards[nee Haynes] b abt 1844 City of London. They married 21 July 1867 St James, Shoreditch. I have them on the 1871 UK census at 3 Red Lion Street, St Andrew, Holborn, then they just disappear.

Thomas James was a wine cooper by profession [as was most of his family]
I notice on ancestry 1880 census there is a Thomas Richards with wife Caroline living in San Francisco and working in a liquor saloon, unfortunately I do not have a subscription that covers the US.

I have no real reason to suspect that it is my missing twosome but the nearest I have got so far, can anyone help me to track this elusive couple down please.

Cullen.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Newland Hull, Sculcoates
« on: Friday 04 March 11 09:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

on the 1911 census I found found a pupil at a school called Newland Hull. in Sculcoates.
This institution is actually described as an orphanage but this lads mother was still alive.
Is there any info out there on this establishment, or could anyone help me please?

The lads name was John Dutton but he is called Jack at Newland Hull. b 1897 in Bromley, kent.
I found him on 1901 with his parents John Dutton and Laura, his mother states she came from Norway [confirmed on 1911] and his father from New South Wales, which i first took as Australia but I have no proof.

I have found his birth in Poplar 1896 and his death  in 1972 Amersham. I have sent away for his birth cert to confirm his parents names/occupation etc.
I have found a possible marriage in  J q 1895 for a John Dutton and a Laura Ingeborg Johnsen. again Sculcoates area [I wonder if Laura's surname has been anglesisded form Johannasen - but that is just a guess]

If anyone can help I would really appreciate help confirming any of this information.

Many Thanks

London and Middlesex / Missing wine cooper - Thomas James Richards
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 18:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
THOMAS JAMES RICHARDS (b30 Nov 1846 Cripplegate) married CAROLINE HAYNES (b abt 1844 City of London) on 21 July 1867 at St James, Shoreditch. He was a wine cooper at that time as was his father JOSEPH CHARLES RICHARDS. On 1871 census they were living at 3 Red Lion Street ,St Andrew, Holborn His name on the census is James and a beermaker. After that they 'disappeared' I have tried RICHARDSON and HAYNES, also both Thomas and James on all the available census with no luck.
I thought I might have found his death but the certificate confirms that it was not him. This one died 27 Apr 1876 in Islington but his age is completely wrong and  a step daughter was present at his death, Caroline was a spinster when she married [without any children] age 20 so another sign that is the wrong certificate. I have search for this pair for years so would be pleased for any help or advice.

Thanks

Cullen

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / HEDON PR look up please - Higgins
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for a baptism for TIMOTHY A HIGGINS born abt 1856 in Hedon.
I have found him on 1871 census in George street, Hedon as a lodger. I have no idea who his parents are and i can't find a birth entry for him. i haven't seen many other Timothy's around in this time period - but I could be wrong.
I have found him on 1881, 91 and 01 census but not 61

he 'married' Jane Nixon but I cant find a marriage for him either. They had a daughter in 1880, known as Minnie but I think her proper name might be Winifred.
What a mystery this family is.
I am not in a position to buy certificates as I am trying to help a friend so any help will be greatfully accepted

Many thanks

I know I can order the probates, but first I have to know what year.

Essex / Woodford business + Ernest Britton
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 20:27 GMT (UK)  »
I don't know if there is someone out there who can help me, I am looking for some background on a business in George Lane, woodford abt 1914. there was a 'shop' run by Ernest Charles Britton who was appently a ham and beef  dealer. Any idea what the business was called?

I have this info from a street directory - Kelly's, from the historical directories site.
on 1911 census Ernest Charles Britton was a 'Provions mercharnt' Dealer living at 20 Orford Road, s. Woodford.

The reason whi I am interested is that he married a relation in 1942 and my mother recals that he was a town mayor or something similar and used to go to 'posh dinners'

Any info would be welcome

Many thanks
