Cambridgeshire / Edward Coles & Elizabeth : Searching for their marriage
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am searching for the marriage between Edward Coles and Elizabeth.

Their son William Coles (My 4x G Grandfather) was baptised  21st Oct 1760 at March, Cambridgeshire. William was buried there in 1836 age 76 and that is why i think he was the son of Edward & Elizabeth.

I have found on Family Search two families with parents named Edward & Elizabeth in Thorney, Cambridgeshire and Farcet, Huntingdonshire :

The Thorney couple had a son named William Cole baptised 1773 so that rules them out.

The Farcet couple did not have a son named William born c1760 so that rules them out as well.

Thanks for the further info Paul C.

Glad you agree that our Cruse families are from the same family.

The surname Cruse is so rare in the area. That is why i think that my Elizabeth is probably the sister of your Thomas.

Perhaps they were Non Conformist and that is the reason why we can't find their baptisms ?

Family Search have your Elizabeth Cruse baptized 2nd May 1802 daughter of Thomas & Jane so that confirms her as the daughter of Jane.

Good luck with your search on Ancestry. Yes please let me know if you find out more info on the Cruse's.

Hello Paul C

I think my Elizabeth Cruse is probably the sister of your Thomas Cruse and they are probably the children of Thomas Cruse & Elizabeth Giet ?

Your Elizabeth b1802 must be the daughter of Thomas Cruse & Jane Clements who married 26 Jun 1785 in Sherfield on Loddon. Thomas & Jane had another daughter named Elizabeth born in 1786. She must be the 1787 burial in Sherfield on Loddon. I think the 1827 burial could be this Thomas ?

Here are two more burial's i found :
Elizabeth Cruse buried 1792 Basingstoke (born 1726).  (Probably Elizabeth Giet ?)
Thomas Cruse buried Basingstoke in 1811. (Probably Thomas the husband of Elizabeth Giet ?)

Possible name variation of Giet :
Guyatt : (Family with this name living in Basingstoke early 1800's.)
Gyatt.
Geat/es/s.

Hello Colin

Thanks for searching her baptism.

That is the only one i have found also on Family Search. The year is about five years earlier than her burial age and Portsea is quite far from Basingstoke.

Hello

I am looking for the baptism of Elizabeth Cruse c1759.

She married John Benwell in 1778 in Basingstoke by Licence. A witness to their marriage was Thomas Cruse.

Elizabeth was buried in Andover in 1838 age 79.

Thomas Cruse married Elizabeth Giet 9th May 1761 in Basingstoke. I am thinking that they could be her parents ?

Hello JDC

Thanks for your help. I will follow up on your advice.

Three of the Censuses say she was born in New Brunswick. One says she was born in Quebec.

Hello Maddie

I didn't know you also had a Humphrey family in the area.

We very well could have the same Humphrey family. We know definitely that a member of your family is living with members of my family. That in itself is quite amazing !

Yes please let me know if you are able to make a connection between our Humphrey families.

Hello Maddie

Thanks very much for the Militia List info. That is an excellent bit of info.  :)

Nice to know Thomas's occupation.

David seems to have left Rickansworth c1786.

Thomas & David of Ashenden had a sibling named Richard as well. I guess though seeing as the age was roughly 15 - 45 on the Militia list that might rule out David from Ashenden.

Yes there is no sign of a William which further points to the fact that he never existed !  ;D

Yes i did think David may be too old to be having children in the 1780's. Still possible though seeing as he would of been about 50 years old.

Sad about the children dying as infants.
