Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 arrives July!

Thanks for all the previous comments and information, especially from Falkyrn. Very useful.

I'm beginning to think Win10 isn't for me - the "always connected" philosophy isn't compatable with mobile connections with limited download allowances.
Cortana persistently collects and uploads personal data to "enhance the user experience", and some of the app's (uggh!) appear to be permanently connected to provide location-relevant information - not good for privacy or data limits.
I already have the software I need (apart from upgrades) so the app store is irrelevant to me as well.
 :-\
I know most of these functions can be switched off/uninstalled, but then you're left with an OS that isn't vastly different from the one I'm using now!
Soooo, each to their own, but it looks like most of the advantages of 10 are designed for other customers; I'll be giving it a miss.
Thanks, again.

I'm still on XP on the pc - some of my hardware/software won't work properly on anything later.
 :-\
I've got the notification on my Win7 lappy, so I'll give it a go - but only 'cos Falkyrn said it was reversible if Win10 isn't suitable.
As long as I know who to blame if it all goes wrong.................!

Technical Help / Re: Windows 7 - not working
« on: Tuesday 30 June 15 13:41 BST (UK)  »
This might help:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/safe-mode-windows-7.htm

If it starts in Safe mode, it might be a software problem.
If it won't, it might be hardware.............

Good luck.

My priority for any operating system is that it runs the software I want to put on it - I'm not going to spend hundreds on new software just so I can say I've got the latest OS!
I'm still using XP quite happily on my p.c., and there's no real reason to change that.
 ;)
I'm quite open to giving Win'10 a go, but only if it doesn't cause problems with my presently functioning system on the laptop.

London and Middlesex / Re: Peck's Fishpaste Factory, London
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 13:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, Mikael,
My mother worked there prior to "joining up", for the ATS.
I was half hoping someone might have pictures from the time as her memory isn't so good - she worked there with several friends who all left around the time of the UXB.
Perhaps they thought they'd be safer in the army.............!

Thanks, Maggie.
I can't say any more than echo what has already been said.
Big hugs and sincere condolences to you, and the rest of Charlotte's family.

Technical Help / Re: Unable to access Yahoo email
« on: Thursday 14 November 13 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Since the latest "upgrade" my folders in Yahoo Mail don't work properly - I have to click on a different folder, then go back to the one I want to view.
Not a major problem, but gets a bit tedious having to click off the in-box, then on, to see if there are any new mails.
It's been suggested to me that I need to change my browser to IE or Firefox, as the one I'm currently using isn't supported.
I'm now looking for an alternative email provider.

Completed Census Requests / Re: CD-RW discs
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Speaking from experience, you may not be able to modify CD-RW's created on your home machine, on a library machine - in the past I've only been able to modify CD-RW's on the machine on which they were created.
I use memory sticks to transfer data from library to home, and update cd's/dvd's from my home machine only (XP).

The Common Room / Re: ** RootsChat is (almost) 9 !! Happy Birthday !!
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
Oooh, another celebration. Great!

I won't mention names, but if I hadn't found RootsChat then I probably still wouldn't know who my father was - that's how important it has been.
Many thanks and respect to all those who help others, and for Trystan and Sarah for providing the means to do it.
And thanks, Bob, for mentioning those who sadly passed on last year.

Happy Birthday, RC!

'Hat.
