Technical Help / Re: controlling Google

I don't know if this is helpful, but AltaVista (Yahoo) offers the option to  "Search only for pages written in one or more of the following languages:"

I haven't tried it, in case I can't read the option to return to English......!

Technical Help / Re: Logitech headset
« on: Sunday 16 December 12 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
I found this:

    Logitech Model: H360
    P/N: 981-000242
    Product Requirements:
    Windows 2000/XP/Vista
Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later
Available USB port (1.1 or 2.0)

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but does your included paperwork say it works with your operating system?
If it does, I'd be inclined to return it as faulty, as your 'puter seems to be fine with everything else.

Technical Help / Re: broadband conundrum
« on: Saturday 15 December 12 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
I use a 3 Mobile dongle, and I have this problem periodically - it is usually either an increase in local customers, or a fault with the relay mast.

If you contact 3 customer support they will ask you to try a different computer/device, and a different post-code location. They will then pass the problem on to their tech' team, which usually takes ten days. They will then tell you how long the problem will take to fix - usually another ten days.

In all cases 3 have cured the problem, and have refunded the charges for the time I've had poor service. They are very polite, but very slow!

Good luck,

Technical Help / Re: AVG Tuneup - unable to get rid of pop up.
« on: Wednesday 21 November 12 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
I use XP.
What I would do is (offline) stop all instances of AVG, uninstall them, then delete all AVG files from the hard drive, and references in the registry (Start/run/regedit).
Then I'd re-install the original AVG.

For anyone who is used to fiddling about "under the bonnet" it should be fairly straightforward!

Technical Help / Re: pc.security
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 10:54 GMT (UK)  »
I currently run Avast a/v, and Online Armor (both free versions) on my XP p.c. I also scan weekly for malware.
I use the Comodo firewall (free version) on my XP lappy, with no a/v. Again, I scan weekly.
The only problem I ever had was having my e-mail "spoofed", but that was after someone else posted it on a public website. Thank you very much.

My son uses the Comodo suite (free version) on his Vista lappy. As far as I'm aware he hasn't had any problems, though I haven't checked it recently. My other son uses Norton that came with his Win7 lappy. No problems there, either.

I've tried most of the free security softwares (I'll try anything on this lappy!), and the biggest problems I've encountered are failed updates/upgrades and resource hogging. The difference with paid-for software is that you should get full technical support if something does go wrong - obviously using free software I don't expect any!

I believe the best security is just being very careful how we use the 'net.
Just my opinion, and not something I want to get into a debate about!

Best o' luck, Gooddog.   :)

I've used this successfully in the past:

There is a link halfway down the page for the free version.

Good luck.

Technical Help / Re: Complete scan of main drive. - Virus checks
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 14:49 BST (UK)  »
I use two scanners (no a/v), and do full scans every weekend.
This old lappy only has a 40gb hard drive, is 70% full, and the scans take about an hour and a half in total.
No problem - I just get the bike out and let the 'puter get on with it!

Technical Help / Re: Internet failure
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 14:40 BST (UK)  »
it said it was checking for solutions on line. As I couldn't reach the net how did Windows manage to?

In a similar vein, I always wonder how Adobe Flash knows "updates are ready" etc., before I've connected to the 'net (mobile broadband).

P'raps Windows has a secret connection? Scary!
 ;) ;D
