Dumfriesshire / Re: John Goldie b 1797 Tynron

Hello Brigau,

I'm not convinced the death in 1881 is correct for the John Goldie born Tynron 1797. I believe this record to belong to an upholsterer who lived with his daughters Martha and Mary and sister Magdalene. Certainly the census records would suggest this. I've pretty much exhausted all the other possible deaths recorded as coming from other Goldie families.

"My" John Goldie married Sarah Ann Peart in 1820 in St Dunstans Middlesex and baptised 2 sons John Henry and Thomas Joseph in 1824 in Shadwell Middlesex. He was recorded as a Mariner at the time. I have a record of a Sarah Ann Goldie (widow) marrying a John Smith in Shadwell in 1826 which might suggest John Goldie died around 1824/25.

I will email the website owner who records his death as 1821 again and see if he can give me more information and will post back here. It would be lovely to clear this up once and for all  ;D

Cheers
Maggie

Dumfriesshire / John Goldie b 1797 Tynron
« on: Friday 26 September 14 09:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I am trying to confirm the death of John Goldie b 1797 (parents Jame Goldie and Ann Gault) who possibly died in 1821. I've sighted a website which suggests the info came from a headstone in Dumfriesshire. The exact wording is   Name: John GOLDIE
Born: 25 SEP 1797      at: Tynron, Dumfries, Scotland FHL Film 1067971
Married:                  at:
Died: MAY 1821       at: Isle
Could any kind person confirm where this headstone might be? I'm in Western Australia and therefore cannot check for myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks Maggie

Hello again Betty,
I'm so sorry for not responding sooner, but I've only just revisited this forum and seen your message. Thank you so much for looking. When I visited the cemetery in early October, I was able to find the grave site of my great grandfather Charles Frederick Bruce and great grandmother Rosa. You're right in saying it's pretty overgrown, but it has a charm.
I was able to follow the map supplied by Shepway Council to their grave exactly. I was thrilled to find it. I didn't however have any luck with the other two family members George Henry Bruce or his half sister Catherine Dennison Bruce. I know George died in 1937 and there was a burial service at St Marys and St Eanes, but there is no record of him being interred there.
My visit to Folkestone was delightful. I was able to stay at the Bruce family home in Earls Ave which is now Wards Hotel. I actually stayed in the very room my mother was born in, in 1922! The Lees and the harbour brought back many childhood memories of when we visited my aunt. The trip alas was too short and I had to return to Australia.
Thanks once again for your efforts. Cheers
Maggie

Ha ha ha! ;D
If you come across my great grandfathers brother George Henry A Bruce 1857 - 1937 or their half sister Catherine Dennison Dowie (nee Bruce) 1878 - 1966, that would be extraordinary! The Bruce family lived in Earls Ave at what is now Wards Hotel. I will be staying there during my visit and hope to be staying in the very room that my mother was born in. She had such happy memories of growing up there. I have some old photos of the house, so it will be interesting to compare them from the early 1900's and now.
Cheers

Hello again Betty,

yes the plot number is 3203 and its in the consecrated grounds to the right hand side of the main cemetery entrance going in. It looks as though the burial plot is in the third row of the second quadrangle. I think I'll be able to find it easily enough without you having to bother with a trip yourself. But thank you for your very kind offer anyway.

Cheers
Maggie :)

Hello Betty,

thank you for your welcome and a BIG thank you for offering to look for my great grandparents graves. Just today, I heard back from Shepway Council who were able to give me a burial plot number and a map of the cemetery. How good is that! ;D

My pending visit to Folkestone has been made all the more enjoyable, knowing that there are kindly folk like yourself who are prepared to go out of their way to help. Thank you once again. Maggie :)

Hello Folks,
Is there anybody who lives near Cheriton Road Cemetery who has the time to find my great grandparents graves please? Charles F Bruce died April 1928 and his wife Rosa (nee Bingham) Bruce in November 1928. I will be visiting Folkestone from Australia in early October and would like to visit their graves.

I know they both had  funeral services conducted at Holy Trinity and I'm assuming they were buried at Cheriton Road. I doubt they would have been buried at St. Mary and St. Eanswythe if the services were at Holy Trinity. I have emailed Shepway Council for their assistance but so far no reply.

I'm quite happy to spend an afternoon searching when I get there, but was hoping for a map or layout if anybody has one? Regards Maggie :)

Lancashire / Walter Manton Partington 1894 - 1958
« on: Friday 25 February 11 03:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm looking for any information on my great uncle Walter Manton Partington, born 1894 in Castleton, Derbyshire and died in Westmorland in 1958. It appears he was one of very few licensed wild animal trainers in northern England and went under the name of RETLAW. After his marriage to Bertha Hayes, he settled in Blackpool. His wife sadly died in 1928 during childbirth and he brought his surviving children Ronald, Walter/William, Jean and Raymond up on his own.

I'm most interested in his profession, but can find no information that would relate to him. Can anybody help?

Cheers
