Australia / WW1 service records; Edward Alexander Austin
« on: Saturday 01 September 12 06:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Just trying to find service records for Edward Alexander Austin, born 1890, Mirboo North, paremts John Edward Austin and Isabella Roughead. He was killed in action in France 1917,
Also Leonard Austin, marriage in 1933, to Violet Yeo, says his parents were John Edward Austin and Mary Leonard. Born 1896 in Melbourne, died 1976 in Canberra. No birth has been found or a marriage for the parents.
I dont need information on John Leonard Austin and his marriages, first wife died in 1898 and he married again in 1908, unless he fitted in another relationship between these wives.

« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Just wondering if anyone can see any extra information on William Broughton who died at Leongatha in 1911.
His parents are listed as Joseph Broughton and Lucy Barber. I am looking for William whose parents were Joseph and Jane, just wondering if could be the wrong mother on the death certificate.
I can't see William on the electoral roll at Leongatha either.

Australia / Are historical certificates the original??
« on: Sunday 20 May 12 07:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi
When we buy either a Victorian or NSW certificate which has handwritten information on it, is it the original document or a copy of??
I have noticed on the Victorian ones where there are different births, deaths or marriages recorded on the one page that the handwriting all appears the same. Are they in fact a copy?? Is there room for transcription errors to occur at this level?

Australia / John Nelson "Sarah' or 'United Kngdom'
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 00:32 BST (UK)  »
John Nelson married my GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Robinson [Robertson] in Sydney, 1849. They were witnesses to her daughter Jane Woods marriage to William Holmes in 1853.

From then we have lost track of John in particular. There are a couple of mentions of John Nelson in Darlinghurst Goal, one who arrived on the 'Sarah' the other the 'United Kingdom'. I am wondering if either of these gentlemen arrived free or as convicts, I can't find either. ???

Elizabeth has spent a couple of periods in Darlinghurst Goal in 1857 and 59, possibly other incarcerations in 1869 and 74. [Using names Walsh and Quin]

Elizabeth arrived in WA on the Hooghey in 1829, the daughter of Jane and Joseph Broughton, she was born in 1812 in Manchester, we guess from Jane's first marriage.

She married Henry Wood in 1830, he was then sent on to Van Diemans land in 1845, Elizabeth and daughters Jane and Mary with him.

Elizabeth has left Tasmania at a time unknown, taking the girls with her. Henry later remarried as well, presumably after being separated they both decided the marriage was over.  ::)

Any help appreciated, though it is really only John and Elizabeth's movements that I am after.

Australia / How was a stillbirth registered 1936?
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Yesterday I found a death registered as a child of my Grandparents in 1941, I found they had a daughter who only lived for 9 hours, I was able to buy her death certificate.
Now I am told that there was another stillbirth in 1936, but there is no death record. Would the birth have been recorded? Just a bit interested to know if that one was a boy or girl,
Makes me think of my Grandmother in a different light today, until now I thought it was all just happy families. Now I find that she had to deal with the loss of her last two children and most likely never be able to visit their graves. They were buried in the nearest large town where the hospital is, most likely in an unknown location.

Australia / Edward MATTHEWS, where did he go?
« on: Friday 10 February 12 04:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

We are trying to find out what happened to Edward Charles Matthews, mentioned in a previous thread.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=565520.msg4326191

I have Edwards birth certificate which shows that he was born at Icely 15th July 1871, parents Charles Matthews, Carter 21 years born in NSW. Mother was Helen formerly Hartnett 23 years born in NSW.
Place of marriage was Icely NSW 25 July 1870.
We know that this is our Edward as the last mention of him is a newspaper article from Wangaratta Vic in 1906 where the Police say he has used the name Ted Hartnett or Johnson.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article70758047

I found a few newspaper articles mentioning an Edward Matthews in Albury and Wodonga in the 1920’s, sounds like our man but I cannot be sure.

Any ideas

Hi
I am looking for information held on microfilm at the Mitchell Library, I have the marriage certificate and it has blanks.
Date of marriage 1853, William Holmes and Jane Elizabeth Wood.

Parish of St Lawrence, County of Cumberland. Miister was Thomas D Wintle.
I am particularly after the information about William, his childrens birth certificates give his date of birth as somewhere around 1819, place of birth Norfolk, England.
