Australia / Stockmen's deaths at Thologolong c 1836
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am looking for some help to try to verify a local bit of history. The Sutherland family at Thologolong Station tell the story that has been passed down to them of two graves near their old homestead. The graves now lie under the waters of Lake Hume but can be seen when the water level is low.

In 1836 Joseph Spalding while employed by J A Broughton is said to have taken a mob of cattle south from Yass and settled at Thologolong, two of the men were killed by aboriginals and were buried there before the remainder of the party moved further down river and settled at Wagra.

Joseph Spalding arrived in 1832 aboard the 'Clyde', I can find him assigned to Eliza Broughton in 1832 at Appin.
Wondering iif there is any way of working out who the other men in this party were, who alse was assigned to the Broughton's. I am struggling to get a clear picture of who J A Broughton was and where Eliza fits in.

Australia / Charles Warnock Service No 1307
« on: Friday 09 December 11 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have had a card from the Ausrtlian War memorial for about 30 years, it gives details of Charles Warnock, mother Julieanne Warnock, KIA 29th July 1918.
On trying to track him down to see if he was one of my family I find that his mother had remarried, to a Warnock and his father was dead at the time he was killed.

Then I am curious about the John Warnock she 'married',  from electoral rolls from 1909 onwards at the same address giiven in the Service Record. John and Annie Warnock at 264 Gordon St Footscray 1909-1919.

I can't find a marriage for a Julieanne or Annie to a John Warnock, cant find a death for Annie or Julieanne Warnock.

I can find them on the electoral roll up until 1924, at 126 Cross St Footscray, I think it is them with David Henry and George Percy.

Australia / Emily MATTHEWS birth?
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am posting this for a friend who cannot find any information about her Grandmothers birth.

Emily Matthews married Thomas Oswald Hayes in April 1918 at Cowra NSW. We do not need any information about this couple after their marriage, they had 8 children, 3 of whom are still living.

Emily and Thomas were married in the Church of England Cowra, by John Parr, Officiating Minister, witnesses were Annie Parr and Ethel Peterson.

Thomas was a farmer of Grenfell, parents Patrick Hayes and Norah Mary Castles, born at Nyngan age 26.

Emily Matthews was 19 years old, occupation, private life, of Grenfell NSW, born at Chiltern Vic. Parents Arthur Matthews, deceased and Annie, nee Rowe. The consent of the brides mother Annie Stokes was given in writing for the marriage.

We cannot find a birth for Emily, or any marriages that fit for Arthur Matthews and Annie Rowe, or another marriage for Annie to Stokes after Arthur Matthews death, date and place unknown.

Any ideas?

Technical Help / Why can't I Google our new website?
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 08:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I recently set up a free website for the Granya Heritage Commitee which has a collection of family histories, photo's, mining information, land records and farming equipment on display. The Granya Pioneer Museum hosts tour buses and other groups who are interested in local history, prior bookings are necessary as all staff are volunteers.

I set up the website hoping that people researching their family history would Google Granya and their family name and come across our site.

Unfortunately I can't even find it on Google when I type in the name 'Granya Pioneer Museum'.
Can someone tell me why?

Hi
I'm hoping someone can tell me if there is any possibility of finding a passenger list for the "Hooghly" which sailed from London and arrived in Freemantle in Feb 1830.
I am particularly interested in the family of Joseph and Jane Broughton who were on board.

Australia / "Leda" Freemantle 15-1-1830 passenger list
« on: Tuesday 20 September 11 09:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am hoping someone can find a passenger list for this voyage of the "Leda" from Sydney. There were eight passsengers on board, some reports say that all sailed on to Mauritius, another report says that two men stayed in Freemantle.
I would be interested also to find out where the "Leda" went after Mauritius and if there would be any passenger lists available at her next ports of call.
I am particularly interested in an Elizabeth Robinson who I have been told is on the passenger list departing Sydney.
